East Coast Beach Suggestions

I am looking for a suggestion of an east coast beach, preferably in North or South Carolina for a family trip. We are planning the first week of September. I grew up going to Myrtle Beach, but feel it is too busy and my husband hates the drive there. The last few years we have gone to Isle of Palms, but my brother and sil think it is too slow paced, which we enjoy about it. So I am trying to find something that is a happy middle of the ground. We have been to Hilton Head, Ocean City, and Virginia Beach, and didn't like them. We have also been to Carolina Beach and I don't think my sil would like that.  I am to the point of giving up on the group family vacation idea for the stress of planning. We want somewhere with a nice quiet beach, and a good amount of non beach activities. Any other suggestions?

Re: East Coast Beach Suggestions

  • When you've been on IOP did you ever venture over to Folly Beach? It's just on the other side of downtown Charleston. There is a little bit more going as far as bars and restaurants than on than on IOP but it's still quiet compared to Myrtle.

  • Tybee Island, GA.  It's 18 miles from the Historic District of Savannah.  It's quiet and laid back but there are a ton of things to do on the island and in Savannah.

  • You could try the Outer Banks...the further north you are the more there is going on, the further south the less, so you could find a happy medium maybe!

  • I agree with the Outer Banks suggestions.  We went for a week in August and had a blast.  We stayed in Avon but visited Buxton (where the Hatteras lighthouse is) almost daily because it was so close.  There is a free ferry to Ocracoke so that is something different to do for a day.  And when we left we explored some of the areas north of Avon, like Kitty Hawk.

  • I know it may be a little further, but have you considered Cape Cod and the other Islands off of Massachusetts? All three of these spots offer the relaxing beach aspect but also have plenty of other activities and going-ons away from the beach. Nantucket was actually just rated best island in the world by National Geographic! Good luck.
