XP: New MFM Dr. at Pennsy

He everyone. I haven't posted here before, I usually stick to TB but thought I might be able to reach some more Philadelphia women here, especially since there seems to be so many pregnancies here!

I thought I might ask you ladies if you have any experience or recommendations for a maternal fetal medicine Dr. at Penn.

I have a very complicated pregnancy history and met with Dr. Ludmir before and he was absolutely fine.

I was just given a referral to have another consult with MFM and was informed that there is a new woman Dr. on staff there, and she is supposedly very up to date on all latest research and studies. Unfortunately, I didn't write her name down to do some research. I know I can call and ask about her and I will, but I guess I am wondering if any of you have met with her. Or if you would feel comfortable seeing a "young" Dr. as opposed to a much more experienced one?

Any thoughts or experiences you can share would be appreciated.

Re: XP: New MFM Dr. at Pennsy

  • I'm sorry to hear you've got such a complicated ob history.

I don't know the name of the doc at Pennsy but my sister is a MFM/OB fellow at a hospital in Baltimore and I would feel very comfortable going to her or a young doctor. They tend to be very up on the newer research and procedures.  I had an uncomplicated pregnancy but saw one of the younger doctors in my practice. I liked her better then the more seasoned docs.

I can reach out to my sister to see if she knows who you're talking about. She might not but I would be happy to check for you.

    Best of luck.

Thank you very much for the reply.  I think I agree that younger Drs. may be up on the newer research.  I guess what matters most is that they understand my fears and concerns.  I guess it couldn't hurt to have another set of eyes review my history.

  • I too am sorry to hear of your pregnancy history.

I met with a MFM for the first time yesterday at Pennsy because I'm having twins.  His name was Dr. Sehdev and he's in the practice with Ludmir. I didn't know who I was going to see because my OB sent me their for twin protocol, but he was definitely nice.  I don't see any women in that practice on their site - http://www.pennmedicine.org/wagform/MainPage.aspx?config=provider&P=LP&ID=380

When I was "shopping" around for an obgyn, I looked at the MFM practice at HUP.  I'm super picky about my doctors because even though I'm relatively healthy, I have an autoimmune disorder, pcos, and some other medical oddities that always confuse doctors (I once had a very rare and severe allergic reaction to naproxen) so I like Dr's that are thorough and up on their research.  I can't stand when I know more than my doctor.  Anyway, after doing some research I really liked the HUP practice and heard good things about Dr. Jamie Bastek.  When I called, I was told she was new.  I tried to get an appointment, but they wouldn't take me because they didn't feel I was high risk.  It was kind of annoying considering at Pennsy, they sent me to a MFM anyway but I guess you have to start with an OB.  They were actually kind of rude to me on the phone, so after that I decided to skip HUP and go to Pennsy.  Pennsy is closer to my house anyway and I got a rec from a nestie.  I also liked what I heard about delivering there.  HUP is also Penn Medicine, so maybe it's her?  The sites are connected so you can flip back and forth between the two MFM practices.

    Hope that helps!

  • Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry you had difficulties with HUP, it drives me crazy when when healthcare professionals are rude, especially when dealing with such sensitive situations.

I have seen Dr. Sehdev before and he was nice. I was thinking this other Dr. is so new she might not be on the wedsite yet?  Who knows. I'm still waiting for some more test results before I call to make an appointment.

Like you, I also hate when I know more than Drs, and really need some one who is up on all the latest research.  Thanks again for replying.

  • I saw sedhev a few times. I liked him. He was the one who didnt want to do my CvS test and explained everything clearly and then did my amnio. I loved him. And he looks like Kumar

  • I asked my sister and she said she's only familiar with Ludmir. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Oh thank you so much for asking her.  I believe Lidmir is the chief of staff, so I think he is pretty well know.

You have all been helpful, thank you!  I'll try to check in with this board more often!

HA, I said the exact same thing to my husband after he left the room.

  • I see Dr. Sehdev and agree that he explains everything clearly and gave us honest answers. One thing I liked about him was that my H and I always said our goodbyes, left the exam room and walked out to the desk alone, while Dr. Sehdev stayed in the room after and reviewed the chart, typed on the computer, etc. It made it seem like he was really spending time on our case.
