Washer/Dryer Recommendations?

Anyone buy a washer and/or dryer recently?  Any recommendations, pearls of wisdom, or things to avoid?

Last night our dryer just decided to stop heating up and drying clothes.  So I will be heading to the laundromat tonight to dry my sopping wet clothes.  We've been having a problem for the last month or so with the washer leaving clothes super wet, like they were just laying in a pool of water.  Between the two issues, I'm not sure if it's worth getting a repairman to come out or just spend the money on new ones.  I think they are about 10 years old.

Re: Washer/Dryer Recommendations?

  • We have el cheapo ones from Home Depot.  One repair that the Mr. fixed himself for about $100.  Cost us $600 for the set.

    They're maytag, if that helps.

  • Maytag is good right?  I don't think I want top of the line because I don't think we'll live there forever.  As soon as the housing market picks up we'll probably start to think about moving.

We are so not fix-y at all, so uh, unless it's like clean out the filter...it ain't happening here. ;-)

  • We bought our set from Queen Appliance in KOP. Low end brand for great price. They also sell better models that are scratch and dent.

  • I still sing te praises of sears scratch and dent. Honestly it was cheap. They are dented but whatever. You can also buy a service contract.

I always forget about this.  The stuff is not used right?  Just dented, or maybe a return or something?  I want cheap, but decent and not used.  My work has a discount through Whirlpool/Maytag, but the cheapest I'm seeing there for what I'd want is about $500 each.  I was hoping to go a little cheaper than that.

  • The tags at the store say what's wrong. We bought a floor model and a dented.
  • We got ours at a scratch and dent too. I have no idea what make they are haha, but I like them, they work just fine. And they were super cheap!
  • Ours are Samsung and I love them.they are front loaders and all digital. I use the wrinkle release setting and the delay start weekly to keep the family in clean clothes. We got them at best buy and found a set online that was discontinued so they were about $500 each but really nice. Don't forget, you can always list your appliances as an exclusion when you sell your house.

  • We caught a fantastic sale on a cheapie but reliable brand (I think GE) at Best Buy many moons ago.

Do you have mildew issues with the front loading washer?  I've heard all these horror stories about it getting gross inside.  For that reason I was going to stick to top loading HE washers, but I've never had a front loader to have personal experience.

  • We bought brand new/scratch LG washer and gas dryer from Queen Appliance in KoP. I did price comparisons against the big-box stores and they beat them by several hundred dollars.

    Washer: LG WM2650H

    Dryer: LG DLEX2550

ETA: we've never had a problem with the mildew issue. I have always left the drum door open when laundry is not inside and I am usually quick to flip wet stuff into the dryer. There was one LG model that we saw that has a small interior fan that drys the drum after you have emptied the laundry.  We did not feel it was worth the extra cost.

  • Weve never had mildew issues but the guy that installed it did advise that you leave the door open when not in use (As erbur said) and we also leave the compartment where you put the detergent open a little to get air flow in there as well. We also use a washer cleaner a couple times a year but I believe thats recommended for all types of washers.
