Do you take your good stroller with you for air travel (and gate check)?
DH planned a surprise trip in March for my 30th bday and we will be flying with DD (in our laps). We will be staying at an all-inclusive beach resort but that's all I know.
I have the City Mini GT. Thinking the big wheels would be good for the beach and the full recline would be good for naps but wondering if my stroller will get destroyed by gate-checking it. I also wonder if it's too big of a stroller to use as my everyday stroller. DD is still in her carseat in the snap-n-go for everyday use.
If you have a bigger stroller (BOB or all-terrain), do you also have an umbrella stroller for quick errands, shopping and travel? If so, what do you have? I know the Triumph is a popular one, but there are many more out there.
Re: s/o strollers and travel
I was just googling this for our Chicago trip.
It depends on airlines. Most will take any stroller but assume no responsibility for them if damaged.
We plan on taking our Phil and teds smart i'm a little nervous to gate check because it's pricey. But unless I can find something like a cheap gluxe or xapp on Craigslist I'll take the gamble no way at 34 weeks I wouldn't gate check.
We have gate checked several times and have had no problems, honestly it is going to depend on the handler that day and how rough they are loading and unloading. Look into a bag for the stroller if you are concerned, on our last trip I even seen someone put their stroller in a contractor trash bag when they gate checked it, it will at least protect the exterior and keep it clean, thought it was a great idea and plan to do that for future trips.
Not sure the difference between regular city mini and GT but I would have no problem taking my mini on a trip, that thing is so light and easy to handle, I think that would be better than snap and go because of the wheels and versatility. We had a triumph and I prefer the mini over that in a heartbeat.

This is good to know, Kell - thanks.
I saw a City Micro on clearance at Target for $99 and thought about snatching it up since it's just a smaller version of the mini. Lower weight limit but fully reclines, has the big sunshade and is lighter. I assume it's a discontinued model because it's not on Baby Jogger's website.
We have no intentions of bring the snap-n-go and carseat - not enough room to stretch out and she would get so hot in the carseat.
We gate checked our city mini and had no problems. We bought this so it didn't get scuffed up and would recommend. It's super cheap and just gives you an extra layer of protection. Plus it makes it easier to spot if there is a big pile of strollers at the gate.

Are you also bringing her car seat? I assume so since how are you getting from the airport to the resort? You can check both a stroller and a car seat at the gate no problem. When we went to Cayman we took our Chicco Liteway since I was paranoid about taking the City Select. The City Select would have been too massive to check (in my opinion) and I didn't want those knuckleheads tossing around a $500 stroller like it was nbd.
Random note: You can also board the plane early since you have a baby.
ETA - When we checked DD's car seat, I put it in a large clear plastic bag to protect it from dirt. I learned this one the hard way with DS's car seat when he was a baby. The fabric got ripped and there was black goo all over it somehow. God knows what happened to that thing.
ugh - HW...I didn't think of needing the carseat for that.
this is what's annoying about not know anything about the trip. dh is wonderful for surprising me but i doubt he's thought of this stuff. so now i will keep badgering him with emails about "remember this" and "don't forget that".
We did 2 big trips with DS when he was really little.
Ireland- we checked our Vista (pretty big) and had no issues. We used the car seat adaptor and put the base of the car seat in the basket of the stroller when we were walking through the airport. It was no problem and I honestly think the guys doing gate check are ususally as careful as they can be with strollers and stuff.
LA- we bought the Chicco Capri and a carrier. We checked the car seat at the ticketing counter and just had the carrier and umbrella stroller. DS was 9 months at that point and it was perfect for the trip we took. We didn't use it on the beach but it was easy in and out in the car. I was on my own flying out, so I liked that I didn't have to deal with a big stroller and DS by myself. It had its own carry bag with a strap that helped a ton.
We ended up buying one of the car seat covers for cheap and it worked really well for us.

When we went to Florida with E, we definitely stuffed her car seat bag full of diapers.
H tells me we have transfers between the airport and the hotel. he is going to ask if they can provide a carseat.
uggggghhhh diapers! i forgot about those too. i definitely won't be bringing cloth with me!
When Brooks was smaller we brought his big stroller (Quinny 4 with the bassinet similar to a bugaboo). Now that he's a toddler we normally would fly with his car seat, but I can't install and uninstall. We have a strap that attaches the car seat to the car on, so then the car seat has wheels.
I've decided I'm going to borrow my friend's city mini and if I love it that's what I may buy. I do have a car seat bag that I will put the stroller in when I gate check it.
