Baby Monitors

I remember a post sometime ago that caused some debate but that's not where I'm headed with this.

Our house is a small airlite rowhome (Philly girls should know what I mean here ). LO's room is literally adjacent to our room.   Would you invest in a video or regular audio baby monitor?  Do we even need one since we live in a relatively small house?  The only time I may not be in earshot of the baby is if he is sleeping on the first or second floor and I am in the basement for some reason doing laundry or I am in the shower and he is sleeping.

Re: Baby Monitors

  • I think my video monitor is one of the few baby items I can say I couldn't live without.  I can usually hear DD down the hall at night, but it's wonderful to be able to click a button and see what she is doing without going in there and disturbing her.  Case in point, sometimes she will wake up in the middle of the night, cry for a few moments and go right back to sleep.  So it's nice being able to check in on her and see what she is doing without having to open the door and peek in and risk fully waking her up.  I think being able to see what the baby is doing without going in the room if awesome; especially now that she is older and will hang out in her crib for a while after she wakes up.  I can make sure she is just hanging out with her books and not eating the crib and she is non the wiser :)
  • We love our video monitor, too.  At first we thought it was a frivolous purchase but we love that thing for all the reasons TappinPo mentioned.

  • I can't speak to video v. audio but I can tell you that we are in a 2BR apt and use our audio monitor daily.  You should get something at least.
  • We just had a regular Graco monitor when we lived in our rowhouse. I never had a video one, so I don't know what I'm missing. We did have a hard time finding a monitor that worked. We had a lot of interference. We ended up going with a cheap graco one, and we've been using it for 2+ years and it's been great. For this new baby, we got an angelcare monitor b/c I'm worried about him stopping his breathing. We didn't get the video...maybe I should have after reading these other posts.

  • I had the video for T1, they were brand new at the time and it was fun to watch him sleep but I didn't have it for T2 and T3, no clue what I did with it. We just had a regular audio one and that was fine, don't regret not having the video one. We actually just stopped using our audio one last month finally now that T3 sleeps all night. And if she does get up I can hear her screaming "maaammaaaaaa" pretty clearly

  • We registered for the video monitor by Motorola (that comes with two cameras, obviously). DH and I like to sit on the front porch at night in the spring and summer and I thought it would be nice to have it so we can watch/hear them. Plus if I'm in the kitchen and one is fussing, like everyone else said, I imagined it would be easier to just look and see if its worth me going upstairs and in the room or not. Did you already have your shower? Put it on your registry so you'll get the discount even if you have to buy it yourself.

  • Thanks for the input!  We did register for a video one, but we did not receive it.  Since there are also a few other "big ticket" items we still need to purchase(stroller, swing, dresser) I was just trying to see what others thought before we took it off the list.

  • When we had Charlie he was on a different floor than us and we were fine with an audio monitor. I never wanted a video, because I know myself and it would make me crazy. I don't think we used a monitor at all with Sam, she was in our room for a while and then she was right next door

most people love their video monitors, but we never missed it

    I'd do a monitor over a swing.

  • You'll have to pull my video monitor out of my cold dead hands. I still use it daily and can't imagine not having it. I'd buy the video monitor and see if I could borrow the other stuff instead.

  • Agree with TappinPo and I will add the ability to take (and enjoy) a shower because the baby is amusing himself in his crib is another added benefit.

  • Our house is pretty small and not very well insulated, so I can literally hear Hunter from every single room.  However, it is really nice that I can go out in the back yard or sit on the front porch and still hear him.

This is the monitor I have

It's not a video, and I really haven't seen a need for one.  This thing is a beast;  I have gone next door with no static, and across the street with no problem.

agreed. I dont even turn the audio on because the sound machine we have in the baby's room drives me nuts, but I love having the video feature. ours also has an intercom which we use a lot with our older daughter so we can talk to her about her whimsy complaint without running up and down the stairs constantly. Ours is a First Years video monitor and its only like $150 or something like that.
