QOTD 1/22

Are you doing anything to save for retirement?  When do you think that you could retire?  Any grand plans?

Re: QOTD 1/22

  • I have a really hard time wrapping my brain around the idea of retirement because it's so far off, so I have no idea what my life will be like when the time comes. I have a 403b through work that I contribute to to the extent that my company will match. I'll probably increase my contribution as I get older, but there are a lot of other things I want to do with my money right now.

  • H & I are looking into this. We know we need to start, but neither of us work for people/companies that help with this in any way right now. As of now, we just have savings accounts.

  • We have 401K through our works, and I put a lot in, but H actually maxes out what you can contribute a year.  We have some other investments and savings.  We are meeting with our financial adviser next month to look into retirement more seriously.  Honestly, I think we will be shooting for more like 60 as a goal.

  • We have a pension plan that we pay into at work.  We actaully HAVE to pay into it, there is no opting out.  I also have some IRA's that my dad set up for me when I was younger.  We need to start looking into deferred comp.  We may start putting some money into that eventually.

I would love to be able to retire after 30 years with the company, which isn't for another 26.5 years.  :(

When we do retire, I would like to be able to travel.  I love travelling.

  • We have TSP (thift saving plan) at work.  It's kind of a 401k, I've been putting in 5% since I started 5 years ago, with work matching 5%.  I don't miss it since I never had it. I also have a pension plan.

Once we get debt off us, I want to start H with a IRA and max that our yearly.

  • I have a personal RRSP and H has nothing specific.  My mom set up a CSB (Canada Savings Bond) for me but I don't have a lot saved up.  We have just one income now so saving for retirement isn't a priority now.

I'm planning to set up a better savings plan for us once we have 2 incomes again...I hope to retire around age 60ish...

H really wants to buy land and just plan trees everywhere on it.  In Ontario there's something called a forestry managament plan that bascially pays you to say "I won't develop this land and will monitor what wildlife is here".  he really wants to get into that during retirement.

  • I've had a Roth IRA since I graduated from college (so almost 6 years now). DH opened his Roth a few years ago too. We also have whole life insurance, and I have a mutual fund.

It's so important to start retirement savings early. Our financial planner showed us a graph of what investments look like when you start in your 20's vs your 30's and 10 years makes a huge difference when you're talking about compounded interest. I'm so glad we started early!

  • I contribute to the state retirement system for teachers.  When I retire, I can collect like 60% of my salary when I retire.  I also have a 403b that I contribute to each paycheck.  I don't put much, but I know it's better than nothing.

H has a 401k that he contributes to.  He is also going to open a Roth IRA for us soon, but I don't know when.

I will be eligible to retire at 52 (I'll have 30 years then) but I can't collect full pension until either 55 or 65, I'm not sure which regulation I fall into.  I hope that i can retire then because teaching for 30 years is a long time.  On the plus side, the retirement system gives you an additional 1.5 % for every year you work beyond 30 years :)

  • Husband puts away his maximum contributions weekly into a 401k that his employer matches. I am finishing up my program, but once I get a full time position, I plan on doing the same. Hopefully we will be able to retire early on!

  • We don't have anything set up right now, but once our debt is paid down, I would really like to set something up.  H is about to start working for my company at the beginning of February and our goals are to be doubling our salaries within the next year.  That will help out a lot with our debt, savings, and retirement.  Hopefully our hard work will pay off like we are planning!
