Breast pump and insurance

I was just on my birth month board and people were talking about having a breast pump covered by insurance. Is this true? I have Keystone Health Plan East DIrect POS. I know they sent me info about being reimbursed money I believe  but I didn't see anything about it being covered under the policy in the materials they sent me.

Re: Breast pump and insurance

  • My friend just found out last week that her insurance will do this. She's super excited.

  • I just previewed an article about this in an upcoming BRC newsletter. Apparently each company can interpret the law a bit differently so best to call the company and ask.

  • Yeah definitely call.  Our health plan will cover a hospital grade rental if medically necessary.  If you purchase a pump they reimburse I think $50.

  • I called my insurance (AETNA) and asked about this and they said with Obama Care, breast pumps are covered 100%.

I would definitely call and talk to someone about it.

  • I read through my Aenta plan and it said that a pump would be provided but that it was up to them as to if one would be given to me or if they would rent one for me to use. Come 2014, Obama Care requires them to be given so I'm guessing most plans will just start the practice now but I haven't called Aenta directly yet.

  • My insurance (United Healthcare) covers a hospital grade rental.

  • Our insurance covers a hospital grade rental or purchase of one (not sure if there is a price limit though). You just have to get a script from your doctor and order it from a medical supply company.

I have a hospital grade rental (symphony) and love it. Well, love/hate since all I di these days is pump. I may have to purchase a more portable one eventually but if you have supply issues, this one is best I think!

  • i have keystone health plan east and received notice in the mail that they would cover only $50 towards a pump. i called and asked for more info and found out that the $50 is only if you purchase it yourself at a retail location. if you get it through a medical supply company, it will be covered 100% up to $500. the insurance rep gave me a list of medical supply companies, but i can't find one that deals with breast pumps! it's been so frustrating! if you find one that does, please let me know!

Wow, that's great.  Thanks!  I am going to try to call them later today and will post what I find out.

  • I rented a Symphony for a few months while my Pump in Style collected dust. It's awesome.

  • As others have mentioned, Obama care requires provision of a breast pump as of 1/1/2013. Insurance companies interpret this differently. My insurance paid for a single manual pump only (the cheapest way they could abide by the law!) so Id call and ask. Regardless its better than the zilch I got when I had my first baby!

  • I just got off the phone with Keystone.  They told me under my DME coverage, a breast pump rental is covered 50% from an in-network provider if the baby comes home with you.  If the baby does not come home with you and remains in the hospital, the rental is covered 100%.  They are supposed to e-mail me a list of suppliers, and I will post it for those who may be interested.

  • i love how you hear something different every time you call. did they tell you anything about purchasing one, not just renting?
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • Yes they only mentioned the rentals under the plan.  They said if you purchase it, you have to do it on your own and then submit for the $50.00 reimbursement from Baby Blue Prints.  It seems like no one really knows what's going on.

They did e-mail me the list, but it's in pdf.  I googled them all, and only found one that has the pumps on their website.  I sent them an e-mail.  If you want the list, I can e-mail it to you.  They did a search that's close to my zip in South Philly. I am not about to call every company on the list right now.  Hopegully, the company I e-mailed gets back to me and has somewhat of a clue.
