Taxes :(

Has anyone started filing your 2012 taxes? H and I were playing around with whether to file jointly or separately. I don't know if it is just me but I feel like we would get back even more if we were still considered single. Anyone else feeling the same way?

Re: Taxes :(

  • H and I will file jointly. The way our stuff is set up since H is considered contract labor he doesn't have taxes taken out of his check so at the end of the year he has to pay them unless he has enough deductions. So my stuff offsets his plus the medical deductions I get help too. We don't care about getting stuff back we just don't want to have to pay.

We also have a lady who does ours for us and she always files it whichever way gets us the most money so I never really worry about it.

  • From what I've read it seems like you can actually get back more for filing jointly. We use TurboTax and plan on doing it individually and jointly to see what comes out to more...then we will submit to the IRS =)

  • It seemed like it was better to file jointly, especially because I can deduct my student loan interest but I would not be able to if we filed separately.

  • We haven't started yet, but I think we'll probably be filing jointly.  There is a huge difference between our incomes, so that should work out best.

If you two make approximately the same, filing jointly could mean you pay more tax, assuming there aren't other reasons for you to file jointly, it may make sense to file separately.  Running both returns is definitely the best way to go :)

  • I'm still waiting on a bunch of my tax stuff, bit I've run what I have so far both ways and we get more by filing joint, but H also didn't work the last 6 months of the year due to his shoulder surgery and comp being a bunch of a$$holes so that may have something to do with it.

  • We don't file our taxes as FIL works for H&R Block. He's always done them for us, we trust him and know he'll do what he can to get us as much of a refund as he can.

  • We did some research and it looks like we will do better doing it together. I want to just do turbo tax but H is a little nervous because he has two jobs this year so its more forms. We still waiting for his one job and my school loan one to appear so we can do it! We both usually get a big return so I am hoping for the same results haha!

  • I think we will file jointly, since I actually didn't work at all in 2012 (first time since I was a teenager, crazy!)  I'm pretty sure it will come out quite a bit better for us to do it that way.  FYI Melissa- we have used Turbo Tax the last few years, even when I had two jobs and H had three one year (series of contracts) and it all worked out fine.  We're hoping for a big return too, especially since we just bought a new car Monday! :)

  • My H has 2 W2's and it is really easy with Turbo Tax. They just allow you to add another W2. Shouldn't be to hard.

  • DH has 3 jobs...2 were part time for fun.  We will be using turbo tax once we get everything.  DH say we will be filling jointly and is worried we are going to owe this year!  I have always gotten money back and I'm really hoping not to owe.

  • I'm DREADING doing our taxes.  This will be the first year we go to a tax professional since we have so much crap.  I have to pay back the $8000 first time home buyers credit and I have to claim the income from renting out my house, plus our multiple jobs we had last year and all the investment stuff DH does.  It just seems like a nightmare.
  • I didn't even know you had the option to file separately if you were married, haha.  This is why I'm glad my uncle is an accountant and will worry about all of this for us =P

  • We haven't filed yet, but I think we are planning to file together.

  • H wants to file seperatly because he always ends up paying and not getting anything back. I started my taxes on TurboTax (I've been using it for years). It was showing that I owed money to this effin' state and getting federal return. But I realized that if I file seperatly I can't use my normal deductions, like school (went back this fall, plus the payments/interest on loans paid). So, H will tax to his tax person because I want more money back if possible. I just want to pay off a credit card.
