Living in Cranberry-pros, cons?
Soon we will be making a local move. Hadn't considered Cranberry bc of the dreaded 19, but thought I'd get some insider info on the area. Any help would be appreciated
Re: Living in Cranberry-pros, cons?
We're living in Seven Fields temporarily and like Cranberry. We are making an offer on a house tonight, however, and it's in North Allegheny. The main reason is that my job is downtown and I am saving 20 miles off of my commute a day, which allows me to spend more time with my daughter and somewhat counteracts the higher property taxes in terms of gas and wear on tear on the car.
There's great access to shopping in Cranberry. The community center has activities for families and there's a water park, miniature golf, etc. There are some short cuts to circumvent 19 depending on where you are going.
I actually went to a chamber of commerce meeting this morning with my husband, who works in cranberry, and I learned all these random stats--they said there are 28k people live there now but when it's entirely built out by 2025 they predict 48k to live there. The median age is 38. 20% of people that live in Cranberry work in Cranberry and they expect that number to rise as they build more Class A office buildings and bring in more businesses. They have expanded 228 and they are building right turn ramps to eliminate the left turns to get on to 79 going north or south. So, the population is growing exponentially but they are trying to expand the roads to keep up with the growth. Just keep in mind that it's only over half way "built out" and so it will get more crowded. I wonder whether the school district is prepared for all of that growth.
I'm 5 miles west of Cranberry in Beaver County (Economy Boro). I love it - I'm close enough to run into Cranberry (and that's where our daycare is) but far enough away, too. I don't like our school district (not that it matters , though, bc our oldest goes to parochial school).
I work downtown and overall the commute is not bad, but it does eat up gas and wear and tear, so that's something to think about. I just worked out a new schedule, though, where I will be able to work remote 3x a week when I go back from maternity leave, so I'm really looking forward to that.
Overall, I like the area very much! Good luck in your search!
My three sons!
I live in Mars / Adams Township and I think the area is awesome. I grew up in the South Hills. I love living out here. While there are a lot of homes, I have a working farm across the street from my back yard and love seeing the cows & hearing the roosters and seeing the ducks fly into the pond. We have a ton of deer out here and lots of wild life, so I never feel like I'm far from nature.
Pros - lower taxes on home and land, easy access to all major roads, highways vs 2 lane roads with stop lights every other block, great shopping, excellent school districts in the area, lots of parks and most of the area has sidewalks for easier walking. The homes aren't smack up against one another like they are in Alleheny county, so I feel I have some more privacy; I don't see right into my neighbor's home from my home. Crime stats are good and people are very friendly. Lots of kids out here too!
Cons - some congestion on Rt 19 & Rt 228 (but in my opinion, no where nearly as bad as Rt 51 and some of the goat paths that pass as roads elsewhere in the area.) Commute to downtown can be congested depending on time of day (but at least it is all highway and well maintained roads!)
Good luck!
I live in Zelienople about 10 min outside of cranberry for me I am able to jump on the highway and get off at the 228 exit for shopping so I dont get really stuck in the traffic unless its the weekend or holidays.. Its great cause you can access the turnpike for vacations not far to get to the city not far to get to beaver and not far to get to rt 8 ( just take 228) I love it. I love zelienople especially because its family oriented and a small town atmosphere that is slowly being built up but over all great community! Good Luck on your search!
