When to ask about dress code

I am interviewing for a job, and I cannot get a sense of the dress code. I work at a creative agency and most allow people to wear pretty much whatever they want (ie business casual, jeans are ok). I could not get a sense of the dress code at this job and while its not a make or break, it is a considerations for me. When can I ask HR about dress code in the interview process without seeming like I'm only hung up on it.

Re: When to ask about dress code

  • I would wait until/if you are offered the position.
  • Don't ask until after you start.

But wouldn't that be too late if the dress code is an issue?

I thought you said it wasn't a "make or break" thing. I have a hard time imagining how a dress code could affect your long term career decisions but if a dress code will affect your actions I would be very careful bringing it up.  Maybe sandwich it in with other questions "can you tell me about office culture, dress code and environment?"

When I was a recruiter I don't remember anyone asking specifically about dress codes. If they had it probably would have been a red flag for me.

Maybe I'm missing something, why is your dress code so important to you?

  • It's not make our break, but I am not desperate to leave my current job, so I'm being picky. It's just one of MANY other things to consider. I ended up asking the HR person to talk more about the company's culture and she brought up dress code in that conversation, so I got my answer without having to ask directly. Thanks!

  • Related question as I was reading through... why is it a red flag if someone asks about dress code?

I asked before I started my current job to make sure I could stock my wardrobe with some suitable clothes (I don't have many clothes). If I hadn't, it would have been a mad dash to the shops to buy everything in one shopping trip (which I couldn't have afforded).

  • In an interview you are showing your best professional self and showing you are easy to work with, a team player. When people start asking remedial questions about day to day life I took it as a sign they are looking at this as a job not a career. The director I worked for would say people who asked questions like that would be hard to work with.

Questions about vacation time, lunch breaks, dress code etc. don't look great. People who came in and asked high level questions about business strategy, growth paths, culture, stability etc. got  the job.

If it means anything I recruited mostly high level engineers, sales folks, technicians, HR, accounting and assemblers.

Asking about dress code after you get the job is perfectly acceptable.

  • Ask it on the very first day of your job or at the time of induction, it is not the thing to ask during interview process.
  • Wait until you are offered the job.
