Cooking Asparagus?

I typically buy canned asparagus but would like to be able to cook it fresh. Do you have any tips on cooking asparagus?

I greatly appreciate it!!!!!

Re: Cooking Asparagus?

  • DH and I love to grill asparagus.  I'm not 100% entirely sure how he does it, but I know he wraps it in aluminum foil and grills it.  I think he may put olive oil with it??

  • My husband loves fresh asparagus. I typically put it on a cookie sheet (with sides) drizzle it with olive oil and sprinkle alittle garlic powder over it and bake it at 350 for about 15 mins or until tender.

You can aslo do a similar thing but saute it in a pan as well.

  • you can roast it like any other veggie, steam it, sautee it, boil it etc... very easy. i like to cut bottom of the stems off, drizzle with olive oil, put on foil on a baking sheet, sprinkle iwth S&P and roast until done. then i sprinkle fresh grated parmesan on it. canned asparagus? oye! PLEASE make it fresh :)

  • The best and easiest steaming method I have found is to wet a few paper towels, lay the asparagus down in a single layer, salt evenly, roll it up and microwave for about 3-5 minutes (depends how crisp or tender you like it, if you are used to canned I would think you would want to cook it longer as canned is really mushy)  Also, before cooking, take each spear and hold near the bottom with one hand and snap the end off with the other, it should snap naturally at a point very easily.  When you do this you are breaking off the tough woody pieces.

  • We like it steamed but my favorite way to have it is roasted.  This is my favorite: Balsamic Roasted Asparagus.  If you don't like vinegar, just use the oil.  It's so good!  Also, as an fyi, fresh asparagus is pretty expensive right now (at least in my area) but the closer to spring we get, the less expensive it should get.

  • Sprinkle with olive oil and salt. Roast at 450 degrees for about 5 minutes (maybe 7 if it's super thick). Roasted or grilled, it's delicious.

That's pretty much how I do it too.  It's delicious.
