Gone Girl Discussion (spoilers)

I finished Gone Girl last night - I really liked the book.

At first, I was disappointed with the the last few chapters and the ending.  Towards the end, they were both just so completely messed up - even though they were both pretty dysfunctional throughout most of the book, the level of cray-cray seemed a bit extreme at the end.  And then with the actual ending, my reaction was WTF? and I was disappointed. But then, after thinking about the book and the ending - it all made sense for me, so I am okay with the ending now.

What did everyone else think?

  • Pretty much the same thoughts as you, Meghan!  I felt like the ending was a bit anti-climactic, especially considering the level of drama throughout the rest of the book!!

But, overall, I liked the book, and it was definitely different than my usual stuff.  I have her other 2 books, but haven't read them yet.

  • Yes, exactly!  I was okay with the ending after some thought, but I really think this story needed a huge BANG! type of ending.
  • You go through the book as a reader, feeling some amount of outrage over the sh!t each one pulls and you can't help but feel like SOMEONE has to pay for it in the end.  And when the person who gets the axe isn't either one of these nutjobs, there's no vindication.

It's more of a "sometimes life is like that" kind of ending.

  •  i was really mad about the ending at first, but ended up liking it because it was unexpected.  I expected Amy to get turned in, or at the very least Nick leaves her.

I liked the book, and the level of cray cray was astonishing. Made it a fast read and a good story for me.  I guess there really are those kind of toxic loves out there. But the ending felt soooo off for me, like a completely different author wrote the last page. It was building and building and buidling and then it went out with a little **poof** instead of the fireworks grande finale BANG! I would have preferred the BANG! I thought it was more in line with the book.

  • I actually really liked the ending. I kept wanting it to end with some sort of justice for someone, but isn't it even more awful that it didn't? I think it impacted me more because of its simplicity. It sticks in your craw more because it doesn't end like everyone wanted it to.

Has anyone read any of her other books? How did they compare?

  • I finished it this weekend. I read the book in two days, after being on the waiting list a good while, and reading something that quick is rare for me these days.

I really enjoyed the book, but by the end, I hated both the main characters, especially Amy. I actually kind of felt pity for her husband, despite the fact that he was a total jerk as well.

I didn't mind the ending though, as they're both "trapped" in Hell.

Sorry to drag this topic back up, but I just finished the book. Lisa totally sums up my feelings. Though the ending does drive me crazy!
  • I started one of her older books last night--Sharp Objects--I read about half while "rewatching" The Two Towers with Steve. So far I'm enjoying this one, but it's also on the twisted side.
