Florida Keys short getaway
my H and I wanted to take a long weekend probably in February or March to go someplace warm, easy to get to an inexpensive. WE are thinking of going to Florida, specifically the Keys.
Is there an island that works better for a couple looking for a little romance, just to lie on a beach and drink some drinks? We won't be doing a lot of anything other than lying around, but the ability to snorkel or kayak appeals to us.
I'm not sure if Key West is the best place or if there is someplace else we should look into.
Also, should we think about a rental car?
Can you drive from Miami airport to Key West...?
Re: Florida Keys short getaway
we just got back from key west and loved it! it was just me and dh. it is a fun town, but the beaches aren't the best so not sure if that is a dealbreaker for you. we laid by the pool everyday though, we are not really picky with that, all we need is a nice pool and drinks and we are good to go, lol. we had a gorgeous suite that overlooked the gulf, it was amazing. we went jetskiing around the island and rented scooters, which was so fun. we did a lot of drinking and eating at night, the bars are so fun.
and yes you can drive from miami, it's about 2-2 1/2 hrs. we flew right into key west though. we didn't need a car, I preferred the scooters, they were easy to get around and park. the whole islands is only 4 1/2 miles one way and 1 1/2 miles the other way I believe. Very small and contained, easy to get around and see everything.
we were going to snorkel but canceled our trip to ride the scooters around all day instead, lol. i love to snorkel, but i've snorkeled hawaii and the great barrier reef so it wasn't a must for me to do. the scooters and jetskiing were my favorite activies for sure. it was a first for me for both.
have fun!

IMO, the beaches are better in the Miami area as there really aren't any in Key West. However, just north of Key West there is a beautiful beach at Bahia Honda State Park. I've got an entry in my travel blog (http://wanderlusttraveler.blogspot.com/2012/07/southern-florida-miami-everglades.html) from a trip I took to Miami/Everglades/Key West.
