St John's??

We're porting in St. Thomas but SMIL recommended going to St John instead, if possible, for the day (9-5)....

any recommendations on how to get there/what to do?  Basically, DH and I just want a beach, lounge chairs and alcohol/food!  LOL

TIA!

Re: St John's??

  • st JohnS is antigua, st john is the usvi. just be careful with that. it is easy. google usvi ferry schedule. look for red hook, st thomas to cruz bay, st john and there you go. note theres also a ferry from charlotte amalie, st thomas to cruz bay but it's 2x as expensive, takes 3x as long and runs only 1/3 as frequently. take a cab to red hook instead. cinnamon bay on st john has a nice snack bar and restuarant area. you'll have to rent lounge chairs. you can alwas just bring a towel to sit on.

  • Had to redo my post since I misunderstood your question. St. John has some lovely beaches but those that do offer lounge chairs require them to be rented. I spent one day at Trunk Bay, but it can get quite crowded, especially if there is a cruise in port. I stayed at a resort on the island, so I spent a lot of time just at the resort.

  • I love St. John. We went there on our honeymoon. But for a cruise stop at St. Thomas I'm not sure if I'd go over there. I'd definitely look at ferry schedules at red hook as pp suggested. Consider the time it will take you to deboard, take cab to red hook, ferry to St. John and then cab to a beach. Then you'll have to do all that to get back. I know when we cruised they had cruise shore excursions to St. John which would be a little less of a pain but where they go will probably be crowded.

when I did a cruise that stopped in St. Thomas before I had honeymooned in St. John we just stayed in St. Thomas. We snorkeled and then went up to Paradise point for amazing views. We had a great time and even without leaving the island I felt short on time. I'm not kidding when I say we came ridiculously close to missing the ship!!

so while I love St. John and recommend it, I'd definitely look at how much time you will have there when you take out the extra traveling. It's not a ton of travel time but it is something to factor in. If you just want to sit on the beach then you'd probably have enough time. But if you just want to sit on a beach you can also do that in St. Thomas as well. St. Thomas definitely has a lot of things going on while St. John is small, quiet and laid back. There is plenty to do in St. John though.

As for places on St. John I really liked cinnamon bay. But some of the places I really liked were more secluded and required hiking to.

  • luckystar: cab from ship and ferry to st john take only 1 hour total each way if that. cab ride to beach is short. i've done it many times.
