possible relocation to memphis area: questions
We have lived in Utah our entire lives, hubs is very possibly getting relocated to the Memphis area for work. I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of what areas we need to look at for living in. Good area, low crime, decent homes. We are not incredible picky with house styles just want a nice safe area to look at. Any suggestions?

Re: possible relocation to memphis area: questions
Thank you for the info, very helpful. That is one city that came up on our map. I appreciate the input.
Try going on the local board and getting some feedback from ladies in that area.
I hope the relocation works out, I think it would be great to experience life outside of Utah. For someone who is married to someone from Logan...I know that life in Utah is very sheltered and this will be a great experience for you both!!
Like pp said, do not live in Memphis proper. To the east in TN: Germantown and Collierville. To the south in MS: Southaven and Horn Lake (anything really on the I-55 corridor is safe and family-friendly).
When coming north on I-55 from Southaven into Memphis, avoid the Stateline Rd area. That's a pretty high crime area (and it looks it from the road - it's not like you'd be unsure). Southaven itself off the interstate back in the neighborhoods is fine.
I see your blog says you have 4 children. Public schools in TN and MS leave a great deal to be desired (I can name on one hand the number of our friends I know who went to them). While there are pockets of good public schools here and there, you'll likely want to put your children in private school. Be sure to study the schools closely and be prepared to adjust your housing budget down to leave room in your overall household budget for private school tuition if you can't find a house in one of the few good districts.
Worth considering: TN doesn't have a state income tax, but sales tax on food is about 6% and everything else is about 9.5%; sales tax in MS is about 7%. Property taxes in MS and TN are about the same, though it's more expensive to register a vehicle in MS. While you may be tempted to live in TN just because of the taxes, know that it's a double-edged sword: one year the public schools where we lived couldn't open on time bc the local government literally didn't have the money to pay for teacher salaries, gas for buses, and electricity.
