Kindle Owners!

So I discovered something kind of awesome by accident.  I've read 2 books within the past 7 days on my Kindle, and I found out that I could return them both for full price refund!

Basically, if you buy a Kindle book and finish it within 7 days, you can "return" it for a refund.  I returned them both for a full refund, which was awesome since I felt kind of ripped off paying $13.50 for a digital version of "Gone Girl".

To do so, hover over "your account" in the upper right hand side of the page, scroll down and click on "Manage Your Kindle".  Then hit the + sign to expand options for a particular book.  If you've finished the book before the week is up, there will be a link that says "Return for a Refund".

Totally stumbled upon this by accident, so just FYI if you are a fast reader!

Re: Kindle Owners!

  • oh my gosh, thank you! This is going to save me so much money!  I sometimes finish the book in the same day
  • That is great to know! Thanks for sharing :)

  • Thats awesome! If only I could finish a book in 7 days..maybe I'll be more inclined to try and finish if I can get my money back!

  • I must be the slowest reader on earth!  7 days -- seriously?  My mom asked me to join a book club and I told her there was no way, especially right now with tax season coming up.  I've always wanted to take a "speed reading" class - even more incentive!
  • So I posted this info on the Nest Book Club board and I got ripped a new one! It still amazes me how incredibly uptight most people are. Most of the responses involved this action being extremely wrong and how it just ends up hurting the author in the end. Blah, blah, blah... pull the damn stick out!

I know, right?  They are more than welcome to pay money for their books if it makes them feel better.  It's not any different than renting it from the library or borrowing it from a friend.  I'm pretty sure J.K. Rowling isn't going to starve because I got an $8 refund.  I'd tell them all to suck it =P

And will then replace the book as it wears out.  So if the book is popular, it will be replaced multiple times.

My point is that you wouldn't return a pair of shoes after wearing them once because you want them for a specific event.  If you did, the salesperson who made a commission based on the shoe sale would lose money.  As would the manufacturer because they can't see a used pair of shoes.

It's a similar principle.  The author works for royalties based on the sales.  They take the returns out of those sales.  While it may not affect someone along the line of a Nora Roberts or a JK Rowling, it WILL affect people like Macy Beckett.  The better her sales numbers on Amazon (for example), the more they are willing to do to promote her work.  Returns go against that number.

I know that none of you will care because you're obviously only considering what is best for you personally but think about how it would be if you were the one losing out on a sale.

Nope.  I'm a librarian.  This is not how ebook lending works at a library.

The library pays (quite a bit of money) for the rights to lend an ebook a certain number of times.  When those times are used up, the library repurchases the ebook for another large amount.  The library does not make a one time ebook purchase at the regular publisher's amount and then own the ebook.

I know the math is tricky, but....

    1 > 0

Plus, libraries actually usually buy a lot more than 1 copy, particularly if people are requesting them from their library (which you aren't, if you're just returning them to Amazon).

Library sales are actually a pretty big deal for authors.
