Tankless hot water heater?????
Hi all. I was wondering if any of you have a tankless hot water heater and would like to share your experience with same.
We currently have a propane gas hot water heater that is about 6 years old. I would like to convert to a tankless one but unsure if it is best to go with gas or electric or if this whole idea is terrible.
Any opinions/thoughts/etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Tankless hot water heater?????
We don't have one, but I looked into them because we are hoping to remodel our bathroom next year and were thinking about installing a unit dedicated to the bathroom. Consumer Reports advises against them based on their testing and the consumer complaints they compiled. They also said because the up-front costs are so much higher, it would take over 20 years to break even with the small amount of energy savings. Here's the link:

I have a Navien. We installed it almost 2 years ago. I have no idea about electrical savings as we gutted the house at purchase, so don't have anything to compare it to. If I was doing it over, i don't think I would put it in again.
The biggest benefit is you never run out of hot water. That's great is you're a huge family with 5 girls taking 30 minute showers while running the dishwasher and laundry at the same time. For a small family (we're just 2 now) eh....
It's also very pretty looking.
The biggest draw back is the amount of time it takes the water to heat up and get through the pipes. In my bathroom sink which is the furthest point from the unit (and we have a small 1400 sqft house) I wait about 4 minutes for hot water to wash my face or brush my teeth. NBD in the summertime, it's a Pain it the Fuckingass right now. It's about 1-2 minutes in the kitchen which is right next to it. The bathroom time MAY have to do with just distance of pipes, but I think It's twice as long because you're also waiting that 2 minutes for the hot water just to kick in. Luckily we're on well so at least water is free, otherwise any electrical savings would probably be eaten up by water cost.
2nd draw back, and this is something I honestly don't even notice anymore, it sounds like a mac truck running it's engine down the street when you call the hot water on. It's not a loud noise, but it's there
3rd drwaback, and this I don't know if it's the Navien, or my "98% efficient" Buderus GB-142 furnace, my smaller output BTU baseboards b/c I put my electrical plates too low, the fact that I have 14' ceilings or a combination of all 4, my propane bill in the winter is lethal.
