Do you think the good side of fences should face "out"

We are thinking of DIYing a horizontal wooden fence in our yard this summer. I clearly want to patchwork wood to face in. We are not on a corner so no one but our neighbors will see the wrong fence.

We don't have back neighbors. It's a hill.

Re: Do you think the good side of fences should face "out"

  • I'd prefer the good side to face in, but I thought it had to face out for your neighbor's viewing pleasure. Since that doesn't sound like an issue for you, I'd have the good side face in.

  • I saw your pin for that on Pinterest, it looks awesome!  I would make the inside the nice side.  As long as the outside doesn't look junky I don't think it's a big deal.

  • Our one neighbors are an illegal boarding house sO I could give an f. The other ones only use the yard for their cray dogs. So you know I don't think the dogs understand.

This. I'd have the good side face in for your situation.

  • I agree with SJU.

In your current situation, I don't think it matters.  But......What if you get new neighbors?  Could they potentially make you "correct" the fence?

  • You should see what the ordinances are in your township. In my township and in Philly (I know bc my mom lives in philly and just had hers done), you have to have the good side of your fence facing out. You can actually get fined or something like that if you put the wrong side out.

Pretty side out. Ugly side in. Plus, Ugly side out just looks stupid and it will look like you have no idea what you are doing.

i come from a land of concrete walls so anything is prettier. my understanding of the ordinance is it must be viewed from a public way to fall under the law. since our yard doesn't face any streets it isn't a publicly viewed area.

Build the fence as you want. I don't see anyone "coming after you" for breaking any ordinances, especially considering the illegal boarding house next to you.

Haha so true. It seems like there are bigger issues on your street that aren't being taken care of anyway.

lol right? i call up every couple of months and they go and "check" from the outside OH YEAH IT HAS BIG SIGN THAT SAYS ILLEGAL ROOMING HOUSE HERE.

  • Checked your pinterest, I love that fence, and I would so want the nice side in.

  • Why doea the fence have an ugly side? One day you may have nie neighbors and thy might not want to look at an "ugly" fence. .without seeing the picture of what you want to do i say make both sides attractive

the side that is "ugly" has the posts. it isn't ugly just backwards

  • I think in your case I would have ugly side out. I'm sure the neighbors won't mind, and if they do, they can put a fence up. I would want to enjoy the fence. Good luck with the project!

the neighbors do have fences, one is a chainlink the other is a really scary half falling apart chainlink. neither is very "pretty". our fence will not attach to theirs either.

but because of the aforementioned dogs i want a wood fence, the one  pup who was abused as a puppy snaps at the fence at the little guy. the little guy does not understand the puppy doesn't want to be friends. these folks are not moving anytime in the near or far future and the dog will be around for a while. the mom does her best to grab the dog back in when m is out, but this way both the dog and m can enjoy summers in the yard.
