Adoption?!

I just really need to get this out to process my own self. After my recent health scare, its looking like it may be safer for me to stay away from a pregnancy. Now, we weren't really thinking kids at this moment but eventually. Now, its a big what if? We still haven't really sat down with my doc yet and fully talked about the risks so I guess I shouldn't jump the gun yet. My H said to me last night he really wants his own kids,i believe that if my doc said no way he would be on board with finding other way.  I would love to adopt, I think there is so many children that need homes, why don't we give them ours. I dont think we have the money or the means to do something like this its so frustrating even thinking about.

I just really needed to get this out. Thanks!

Re: Adoption?!

  • Melissa,

There are resources out there to help with adoption expenses.  We are at a standstill with our Ryan pending our homestudy, but our costs are minimal.  We are paying for homestudy and for background checks and H had to take CPR.  If you are willing to take a child that isn't an infant the PA foster to adopt program might be worth looking into.   All said our costs are less then $1000 right now.

  • I think adoption is great!  DH and I would like to adopt some day :)

I don't really have any advice for you, but I think Katie Munro (I looked her up on FB, I can't remember her TN screenname) knows a lot about adoption.  But she's in Canada, so I don't know if it'll help or not.

  • Katie (toothpastechica) would be the most wonderful person for you to visit with about this.  Not only is she adopted but she is a strong supporter and seems to know everything about the proceess/expenses etc.

I wouldn't rush to any conclusions just yet.  I know with everything that has happened in the past week or so that seems unlikely, but just baby step your way through things right now.  I fall into that catergory of not being able to have children and I'm not going to lie, it's a hard road and not terribly fun.  I know whatever happens you and your H will figure it out together and get through it.  GL

  • Katie is toothpastechica and she was my first thought too! Tho wih respect to expenses in the states she might not be too much help. Look into state programs as Leah said! Adoption is a great option!

THANK YOU!  Total brain fart, I could not for the life of me, remember her name.

  • Hahah It totally made me proud that you all brought me up on a post titled adoption! Melissa, I would most def be willing to talk to you about any adoption questions about adoption in general or resources etc, just pm or fb me if you have any specific questions or are curious about anything.  I agree with the pp to take some time to process what you have just gone through, and the implications that having or not having biological children brings for a bit before jumping full force into adoption, start researching, get the facts and info and opinions, follow some blogs, but know you have time and don't have to make any decisions about it this week (or the immediate future)!

To address the question brought up about affording it...Cost wise if you are willing to adopt a child out of foster care there is very little to no cost involved beyond your home study (which some states will reimburse if you end up adopting, they won't in Canada, but depending on the needs of the child there may be "post adoption funding" available if you are below a certain income level) and some legal stuff like passports or last name change, notarizing stuff etc.

International and private/agency adoption are a lot more costly, but may be an option if you are more comfortable that way, either way touching base with local agencies/support services and whoever runs your foster system is a good way to start collecting information to figure out what might be the best fit and what the differences are.

  • Thanks Ladies. you are the best in calming down fears!

I was totally thinking of you Katie!   It will def be a decision that needs lots of times to think about but as you guys mentioned it just hit so I need some time to even process and decide what is best for our family!
