Tales of Dental Horror

So here's a fun story.  Warning: major woe is me crap coming up.

I had been going to dentist A for approximately the last 7ish years or so.  He was DH's dentist when he was younger, then didn't accept his insurance for a while so DH went elsewhere.  When DH went elsewhere and was told that he had 8 cavities, he was livid because he takes crazy good care of his teeth.  DH went back to dentist A who was like uhh, yeah no you have maybe 2 if that.  DH went back to dentist A permanently and eventually got better insurance and was covered.

I needed a new dentist about 7 years ago and didn't have dental insurance becuase of the crappy insurance I had.  I went to dentist A who was so, so awesome to me.  Charged me next to nothing, is an all around super nice guy.  My sister eventally starts going to him when her dentist starts being a jerk.  She had to have a procedure by an oral surgeon and dentist A was super helpful.  All the while, she and I both kept saying "my teeth don't feel AS clean as they used to after a cleaning".  Dentist A does the cleanings himself.  I chalked this up to getting older, blah blah blah.

Fast forward to about a month ago, dentist A is really inconvenient for my sister to go to so she goes back to a different denist at her old office.  They tell her she needs EXTENSIVE gum cleaning, to the point where she has to be knocked out.  All because her cleanings weren't thorough enough.  So naturally I'm pooping in my pants.  I made an appointment at dentist B and went last night.

Lo and behold, the hygenist at dentist B's office was all, lady your teeth are nasty.  Ok she didn't say exactly that but basically that my teeth haven't seen a good cleaning in quite some time.  I come to find out that I have four, yes FOUR cavities that I now have to spend a ton of time and probably money for extra visits getting filled.  AND I have to call dentist A's office to get my xrays forwarded.  This is going to be a crazy awkward situation.  I do not care in the slightest about switching because it was totally the right thing to do, but it just sucks because they're nice people.

Moral of my story, if you don't think someone is doing a good job, don't hesitate on replacing them.

ETA: post title is obviously over the top dramatic.  I'm just so pissed I ignored my instincts.

Re: Tales of Dental Horror

  • That totally sucks :(

Can you get your new dentist's office to call for the x-rays?

Hopefully you can get the cavities taken care of quickly and hope it doesn't cost you too much...Maybe you can get half filled now and half in the new year when your new year insurance kicks in?

  • I feel your pain. My mom worked for a dentist so of course we used the dentist she worked for for our own dental care. The doctor had done her residency at a state run facility so she basically learned how to "get 'em in, get 'em out" and kept that mentality in her own practice. I constantly had cavities and always needed fillings replaced. Not because I was bad at caring for my teeth but because she was bad at the dental work she preformed. When I got my drivers license my mom quit her job and went back to school. I got a new dentist who basically replaced every filling in my mouth and didn't have issues with cavities again. There is nothing worse than finding out you've been receiving subpar medical care. At least you found out now and are able to fix the main problem, the bad dentist!

  • Oh my.  I'm sorry dude.  That blows!  If you can't trust a dentist to clean your teeth, who can you trust anymore?!?

It's funny because I go to a dentist now that also does the teeth cleanings. Growing up, it was always the hygentist so I thought it was odd she does them.  But she is so thorough because she always scrapes the hell outta my teeth, more so than any other place I went. And she yelled at me once for not flossing.  So now I floss daily Embarrassed

Good luck and I agree with getting 2 done now and 2 done another time.

  • Ugh, Jess, I totally feel your pain!  My whole family goes to a dentist that is the nicest guy ever, but totally old school.  He left me in serious pain after any cleaning.  Then, when I was in college, I got a summer job working the front desk at a dentist's office.  Since I was there 40+ hours a week, I figured I might as well get my check-up (since they said I could do it while I was on the clock!).  Turns out I had 5 HUGE cavities!  One was so deep it was almost a root canal.  I never went back to my old dentist and slowly some of my aunts and uncles have switched over to my new dentist.  My parents still go to the old dentist, and honestly I think it's because they feel bad.

  • DH and his whole family all go to the same guy (someone his mom has been going to since she was a teen). The guy is ancient and I went to him once and was like..hell no. Well H's sister decided to go to someone else too and it turned out she needed a root canal! I keep trying to get H to scope out someone else because I just wouldn't be surprised if something similar happens to him. It's very odd.

Sorry you have to get all that work done now :(

  • Thanks guys.  Dental problems are so sucky.  Not the worst, but really sucky.  I went and got 2 of them filled last night and they were awesome.  Dentist explained the whole procedure before she even touched my teeth and I was able to pop in headphones and drown out the noise as best I could.

    Only 2 to go.

That's a great idea! My current dentist has TVs mounted to the ceiling but never offers to turn them on. I'm starting to wonder if they even work or if they're just there to look fancy.

  • Wow! I don't think your title is overly dramatic, Mine would have sounded the same if not worse if that happened to me. There are a lot of Minneapolis dentists I can choose from but the one I go to does a great job, in my opinion. But after reading this, it makes me wonder if I just think I am getting a good job done because of their service and staff. I might just go get a cleaning with a different dentist just to be sure it isn't all just in my head that my teeth are clean because they tell me they are. Getting a second opinion never hurts right? It better not anyway :)
