Mexico vs Jamaica

To those that have been to both, which do you prefer? I've been to Mexico three times. I'm ready for a change. We went to the DR two years ago, but I wasn't impressed. It seemed just like Mexico to me, so the extra travel time wasn't worth it. I don't want to go to all the way to Jamaica and feel like it wasn't worth it either.

If you do prefer Jamaica, which area do you recommend?

Re: Mexico vs Jamaica

  • which part of mexico did you visit? i didnt think mexico and dr were anythign alike..... i haven't been to jamaica yet. i loved curacao though just in case you're looking for other ideas :) and costa rica.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I've always gone to the Riviera Maya.  I guess I should clarify.  I felt like the beaches in Mexico and where we stayed at in Punta Cana were very similar.

    I'll look into Curacao!

  • I've been to both and much prefer the Riviera Maya/Mexico. I think a lot depends on what you are looking for, though. I will probably never go back to Jamaica, but would definitely return to the RM. If I had to pick an area in Jamaica, though, I'd go with Negril. It will have the best beaches.

  • I personally prefer Mexico over Jamaica.  Honestly, the locals in Jamaica got on our nerves so bad trying to sell us stuff, etc. that it was just annoying as heck.  I couldn't even enjoy my quiet time on the beach or out in town.  Haven't been to Negril though so can't comment on that but Mo Bay & Ocho Rios........annoyed!
  • What about the cliffs in Negril?  Or do you need to have beaches?  We love Riviera Maya, but we're trying out Negril for the first time next month.  We're staying at The Caves and The Rockhouse.  I also looked into Tensing Pen.

Another popular combo is a property on the cliffs and then a few nights on the beach - I hear a lot about Couples Swept Away.  We were just on the beach in Mexico for New Years (Excellence Playa Mujeres - it was great), so we didn't want any time on the beach.  I'm pretty excited for some cliff jumping!

I agree with you about DR- we thought it was fine, but we wouldn't go back.  I didn't think it was like Mexico though.

  • I've been to both, although they were very different settings because I stayed on the cliffs in Negril (Rockhouse) and on Isla Mujeres. While I really liked Isla, I liked Jamaica a little more. Rockhouse is a fantastic property, so that probably colors my opinion quite a bit, but I also thought the people were friendlier and the food was better.

  • I definitely prefer Mexico...not even close.

  • I would stick with Mexico too. Puerto Rico is also pretty amazing.
  • I've been to Mexico... a lot.  Cancun, PV, Cabo, and all over Baja.  I've been to Jamaica four times- to Negril, Montego Bay, Trelawny, and Ocho Rios.  By far my favorite place has been Negril in Jamaica.  The beach is beautiful, the hotels are great (resorts and boutique hotels alike) and I found it to be very safe but not too "Americanized" (obviously it is quite a bit, but not as bad as some other places.  I would recommend you check that out.  I can't wait to go back.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.
