More b00b help

I resumed breastfeeding yesterday around noon. So far E has breastfed at all his feedings and took a bottle once. I only feed him from one side bc that's all he will take. But when I was pumping I pumped from both sides to protect my supply. Now I'm back to having engorgement. So should I pump the side he doesn't feed from? I would like to be able to get back to not pumping. Help please! I ffeel like I'm cycling between extremes.

Re: More b00b help

  • I would say to call your LC and ask her advice. If she isn't available try the LLL people to see what they would say. My opinion though- unless you want to pump to store, pump when he takes a bottle and pump the amount he eats. If you want to store then I'd pump from just the opposite side when he does eat and I'd pump for at least 10 minutes.

I could hold you for a million years

  • Thanks! Dh told me to call the lc but I told him I was asking my Internet friends first. ??

  • I just think they might have specific advice for you based on how much you are producing, how much he is eating etc. I keep thinking that by pumping by time versus volume is how I got into the oversupply issue that I had. I wish I would have just pumped exactly how much he ate since I pumped after every feeding. I think that would have helped regulate my supply better. Instead I was telling my body that he was eating 6-9 oz every few hours!

that make complete sense because that's how much I've been pumping too. It's hard to know what to do!

  • I hope the LC will have answers for you!  It's hard to get things regulated in the beginning.  Good luck!!
