beach vacation

So, my family was planning on doing a vacation to Outer Banks this summer, but my sister and I both had babies in September (who aren't good in the car) and my Mom is now undergoing treatments for cancer and will be having 2 more surgeries in the spring, so she isn't good in the car for a long time, so the 15 hour drive to OBX is out.  The thing that appeals to us about OBX is how the beach is not very crowded, things aren't super built up (we usually go down pretty far south, but we do like that there are a few things to do) and we can rent a house, so anyone have any recommendations for places that meet these needs, but are closer than a 15 hour drive (either from central pa or southern central ny)?

  • Nantucket or the hamptons.

I hope your mom is ok.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • I hope all goes well with your mom. I'm going through the same thing with my MIL. Anyway, check out Brigantine, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Ocean City- all in NJ. I grew up in Brigantine, but spent a lot of time in all of the other areas. Brigantine was the hardest hit with Sandy, and so inventory with rentals may be limited, but the other islands are further South and not quite as hard hit. You can also look at Rehoboth or Lewes Delaware.

Not that I want to discourage you from renting at the Jersey Shore (putting money into the economy there will definitely help in rebuilding!), but any homes that were not damaged and that are renting will most likely have construction going on nearby.   Usually, there is a law that prohibits non-emergency work (such as a leaking roof, or a hot-water heater dying) from mid-June through mid-September, but it has been lifted in order to give homeowners less restrictions on rebuilding.  It would stink to spend a couple thousand dollars on a house and have the house next door being rebuilt with hammering, sawing, etc.  Just something to think about.

  • I hope your mom is doing better. That is really rough. I'm all for Nantucket. Have a good trip!
