Estate Planning

HI gals.  I just found out a friend of mine lost her husband suddenly this weekend.  After years of ttc they were blessed with their son 2 years ago. She and i were just talking about life insurance for our husbands.

Do you have your affairs in order?

Re: Estate Planning

  • If say yes, for the most part....we have life insurance on one another. Policies that will be enough to pay off our home and funeral expenses. We have also designated a guardian for A (his godfather, not a family member) Although it's not in writing (yet) We have started that process with our attorney, just need to come up with the money to pay for the will, power of attorney, etc.....

  • we have only my life insurance.  getting coverage for J is not easy at all. still need to do wills, living wills, etc.

for a while J would not even discuss planning but finally coming around.

  • We have policies on each other that would go to the children if something happened to both of us. We also have a trust set up that the caregiver is given a certain amount of money each month until the Children are 21 when the remaining money becomes theirs.

The kids are going to my mother with the stipulation that if she is to old or sick to care for them then they go to Teaghan's godmother.

  • Billandsara how did you set up the trust? I asked my attorney about it and he said we could have our financial planner set it up. Is that what you did?! Or is it spelled out somewhere???

  • Ours is all set up with our financial planner, we put everything together with them when we did our life insurance policies. It is also in our will who the children's are being left to.

  • We have life insurance but nothing else (will make a will if we ever have children).  My policy is just enough to cover the house, N has a policy through work and then we have an additional policy.  His is a big larger when you combine the two bc our health insurance is through him so it would be enough to supplement insurance plus pay the house.

My aunt lost my uncle when he was young and she had a 1 1/2 year old.  He had been unemployed and let his life insurance policy slip with plans to renew when he started his new job.  She was left with a townhouse she couldn't afford and a toddler. Luckily she was able to rent it out and move back with my grandparents to get her life back in order, but it taught me to keep life insurance!

  • We have life insurance that will cover all expenses and the house if something were to happen to one or both of us. However we don't have a will yet and we really need to get on that. The main issue is deciding who would take our kids in the event something happens to both of us. We decided on DH's sister but haven't put that in writing yet and made it legally official.

  • we each have a life insurance policy through work, i know that mine would cover the house.  Like rblucy, we would make a will if we ever have kids. As for a living will, we dont have anything like that, i know ive communicated to my DH what I would like to happen god forbid something happened to me but he isnt fond of talking about it.

  • We need to get on this. DH has life insurance. I was denied bc of an abnormal pap. This was about 5 years ago and I have the 3 years of clear ones required, so I should be good now. I actually just asked DH to get that going for me.

We are just dragging our feet on the will bc we know its going to be expensive. But everyone knows my brother will get the kids if something happens to both of us.

  • We just did a power of attorney, health care proxy and living will for my dad and also took care of some property stuff.

DH and I were supposed to do our wills as a Christmas gift to each other, but we're stuck on back up guardians for J. Do most people name a back up guardian? As for insurance, Danny and I both have large policies with Allstate. I also have a nice sized one through my job. Each is enough to pay off our mortgage and finance college for 2 kids.

  • We both have LI policies, but his goes to me and mine goes to the kids (I chose that because DH will always have a job/pension/etc he won't have to worry about money and therefore money will be put away for kids).

We also have AFLAC policies for cancer/accidents that pay out even more if something happens in those categories.

Kids will go to my sister and my BIL. Sooner or later the ring and wedding are coming. Make it easy to not argue whose family gets them when our siblings will be married.

Thankfully my dad/brother are financial planners and free;)

Kendra- I got a policy while pregnant with Jack (waited til I was smoke free) AND had heart issues/surgeries and still got a policy for 500K and I pay $35 a month.  My brother had a company come do everything at my house and then shopped around for best rate with my results.

our attorney suggested a back up guardian. He just said you don't know the future.....something could happen to original guardian, their life plans could change, they could move away or they themselves could pass away. For the worse case scenario.  He said it was a good idea but not necessary.
