Items for international travel

We will be traveling to Great Britain this summer (July) when E will be just over 6 months old. I was looking into the PeaPod travel bed but saw that it got recalled. Does anyone have suggestions for a travel bed? We'll be staying in hostels and B&Bs. We could also use it when we travel out west for a wedding in May.

Also, has anyone traveled internationally with an infant? I know we'll need to take his carseat, but I'm trying to figure out what to do about a stroller. I don't know if he'll be able to sit up in one, because I was thinking of just buying one when we get there. Any suggestions?

Re: Items for international travel

  • By 6 mos he should be able to sit. That's an item I would see what cost would be when I got there. There are frames with wheels for carrying the car seat through the airport (baby can be in it). That may be helpful.

Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • My advice is probably dumb, but here goes:

    Do you have friends/family there?

I'm sure it would cost extra to get things like a stroller and travel bed on a plane, so I'd be tempted to buy something over there.  I'm completely ignorant about overseas stuff, but is there any chance of having a good chance of finding good consignment shops and picking up those two things for a reasonable cost once you arrive?

Kaitlyn is almost six months, but she's small for her age.  I feel like she would probably be alright in a cheap umbrella stroller as long as I could strap her in securely.

  • I have the Pea Pod travel bed and I got the kit to fix the recall.  The recall was due to babies rolling between the mattress and the sides of the tent BUT if you put the mattress into the pocket under the tent (instead of throwing it inside the tent) this wouldn't happen.  The kit came with a new mattress and 4 supports for the sides of the tent.   We used it last weekend with our two babies inside and had no problems.  I would still get one, especially for a 6+ month old that would be able to roll over easily.

As for the stroller, could you look into renting one while there?  It might still be lower cost to purchase one here and gate check it (a cheaper stroller) than renting on or buying it over there.  What about a baby carrier like an Ergo?  That might be easier with taking the baby on the bus or the Tube.

    Have fun on your travels!

ETA: pea pod folded up is the diameter of a record and about 2" thick.  Minimal room in a suitcase.  And CCH mentioned the Snap n Go if your baby can handle sitting in a car seat as the seat part of a stroller.  You can totally resell that on CL, too, if you don't use it again.

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

  • We don't have any family over there, unfortunately. I would definitely consider purchasing items over there, especially a stroller. I've gone back and forth about the car seat, but according to everything I've read, you really can't trust one that comes from car rental places since you have no way of knowing if it's been in an accident/up to date. E is small for his age too. He's almost 9 pounds at 6 weeks. Thanks for the input!

  • I know that Delta does free gate checking of strollers, car seats and bassinets. Depending on which airline you go with, check their rules when traveling with infants.

Ditto United.  We checked the stroller and 2 car seats at the gate.  Gate checking a car seat is much safer than checking it with your luggage in terms of luggage handling.

International flights have bassinets in the flight.  You sit in bulkhead seating and the bassinet attaches to the wall.  I've seen them used.  You have to request one in advance.

I guess my suggestions would be either Ergo carrier or a snap n go with the car seat.

Thanks for your input! I'm glad to hear from someone who actually has the peapod. I will look into it further. It sounds like it could work for us. I'm also going to look into the Snap and Go. We are planning on getting a carrier, but I'm not sure yet if we are going to go with the ergo or beco. Thanks!

  • DH flies a lot internationally amd noticed a couple flying in the bulkhead seats with a baby.  Apparently there was some sort of portable bassinet that the airline provided?

Also, I don't know if you are familiar with the blog Lucie's List, but she has an e-book on flying with babies that might be helpful (I have not read it myself)

Another blog I read just took her baby to Europe, I believe she checked her stroller

I will be interested to hear your experiences, because it is possible we will be taking our baby to Ireland in the summer.  Not sure if this is a good idea or not!

Please let me know if you find the book helpful!  DH is already talking about getting a passport for the baby, so I think travel is in our future for sure!

I read Brit's blog from H&F too, she goes to such interesting places!  I'm so glad she is doing well now.
