Car Milage Tax?

Ok...so has everyone heard about this new plan they are drafting through congress? I was reading an article earlier and apparentely there is a draft of a plan that will make it so that you have to have an electronic monitoring device in your car to chart milage and you're charged taxes for every mile that you drive.

I'm actually really angry about this because I do commute longer, but that is only because there are such rare jobs! H and I are moving back to our home state next year, and I'm applying for a job in one county and we're planning to live in another because the pay is better in the one county, but the cost of living is unrealistic to start off. So now I feel like if I am going to be charged to drive, then is it even worth it?

I fully believe in green incentives. I recycle, I do my best to conserve my trips in my car, we turn off lights and water, etc, but this goes a little too far in my eyes. It sounds like they are trying to get people to take public transportation, but sometimes that is not a realistic goal--ex:I would NEVER travel on the DART buses here--they scare the sh*t out of me when I'm driving near them, let alone on them. Plus I work out of state.

Ok...I'm done with my rant now...

Re: Car Milage Tax?

  • I just don't see how this is realistic or that this would even happen. So many people out there do actually commute and I just don't see this happening. And as of right now my H can actually write off his milage for taxes since he is contract labor and his truck is like his office. And so many people now days are contract labor and can write stuff like that off so they really wouldn't make any money off of it.
  • I hope this isn't real...I can't even see this happening! People have to WORK to make money to PAY their taxes. I work 32 miles away from work and know people who work further

  • I did some more research on it and appears to be an action that has been on the floor of congress for over a year. This makes me feel better because it is obviously not a progressive reform, but still.

  • Total Bull! I also drive 47 miles one way. No public transportation available. I can't even get into this discussion because I would probably lose it and you ladies wouldn't like me anymore. :-)
  • I doubt they choose to pursue this bill instead of... I don't know... fixing all the more important sh!t that's wrong, like taxes, healthcare, etc... Confused

I haven't heard of this before, but it sounds extremely unrealistic and stupid.

  • I really hope it doesn't get passed! I commute 2 hours a day. That's a really ridiculous tax idea. There are many people around here that live further north or out of state but still work in DC. People do that because they can't afford the cost of living. Great job Congress!

  • I wouldn't worry about something so far fetched getting passed.
