Advice for Friend: Autism Programs/School

A friend of mine was talking with me about her sons situation this morning and I thought I'd reach out to this group to find some advice. Her son is 4 years old and has a form of autism. He is currently in the DART program and said that he recently tested out and will no longer be able to receive services (schooling).

Forgive me if I don't know all the terminology, but she said that he will no longer be able to attend a school dedicated to his needs because of an IDE (IED?). She's already worked with the AIU and said that he could not go there because he tested out.

She says he does well in a structured setting and because he tested out, he won't be able to go to school until Kindergarten. She said that because of his behavior he wouldn't be able to attend a preschool.

Are there programs in the Pittsburgh area, specifically structured school settings for my friend to consider? Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Advice for Friend: Autism Programs/School

  • I don't have any experience with this...but does her school district have a pre-school program?  Ours has a pre-k counts program, and anyone in the district can attend.  And it's free.  Since it's at the elementary school, they may have more experience/resources for an autistic child than say a pre-school run by a church.   (I don't know for sure, but it's something for her to check in to).  Also, it's an IEP.  (My son has to have one for the gifted program as well).   Good luck to her!
  • IEP, it a plan for education used in special ed.

I am assuming that he is high functioning so they are telling her that he can attend a regular school with adaptations to the circulum and/or extra assistance.

I know someone who works with autistic kids, I will email her and ask if she knows of any programs.

  • okay, here is the response I got:

IEP? I would need a little more information. Any chance of giving this woman my email address? I'd love to help. Ill try and contact the county but it will make a difference what area the child lives in.

If your friend is interested, I will gladly hook them up. She really is awesome and loves her job and is passionate about helping autistic kids. Let me know.

  • From my understanding it seems as if he would not be able to attend a regular pre-school becuase of his behavior issues (pretty severe). I haven't heard her say that he is high-functioning nor low-functioning. I know that he needs to be in a structured setting and school environment.

I'll check with my friend if she is okay for me to pass on her information. She lives in the South Hills area. Thanks for checking with your friend.

  • a good friend has a daughter that was on the autism spectrum & went to a regular preschool that was combined with kids that had special needs.  She lives in Brookline so if your friend wants her email to ask questions I'm sure she wouldn't mind.  Her daughter also had therapists come to the house & her school & is now in regular kindergarten.

  • Thank you ladies. I spoke with my friend about your offer for help and she said that she spoke with a few of the teachers and her son will be able to stay in the school he's been attending.
