Dark Carpet: Decoration Help
My husband and I are just about to close on a beautiful home. We were looking for a balance between a modern floorplan and traditional character, and we found it! In anticipation, I have been on Pinterest, watching HGTV, and surfing the web for decor tips.
My largest decoration concern is an open floorplan kitchen, dining, and living room. The kitchen has a nice, light tile, while the dining and living room (connected) share a dark brownish/grey carpet. The carpet appears to be brand new and is in immaculate condition. The space isn't excessively small, but the dark colors make it seem that way, especially coming from such a light kitchen (light floors, light marble countertops, and light wooden cabinets).
My husband has adopted the mantra that we are paying a good deal for a house and so it should be "move-in" ready; which means he will give me no time for large projects (pulling up the carpet and praying for hardwood). We have a long-term plan to replace the carpet with hardwoods when it is worn out, but in its current condition, I think it'll outlast our time in the home.
I would love suggestions on how to brighten up the space, color ideas, suggestions on the type of formal dining table we should get, etc. Anything to help brighten the space and detract from the dark carpet.

A light yellow or green might look really nice with the dark grey. You could use it on the walls, with white or cream furniture.

Lighter walls will work with darker carpets and make it look larger. Depending on what accent colors there may be in the kitchen, you could opt for a lighter version of that accent color, or white or off-white walls.
I've found that using monochrome colors makes a room look larger as well. For example, if the larger pieced furniture is close in color to the walls, ie the sofa, it blends, and you can use accenting colors in lamps,pillows or seat covers.
Depending on your taste, if you like modern looks, a glass topped dining table with maybe chrome or wood base will also make the dining area look larger.
Also, depending on the age of your new home, there may be hardwood floors under the carpet already. My home was built many years ago, when people thought carpeting was nicer, and I have found that all the rooms in my home have hardwood floors underneath the carpet. We've ripped the carpet out of one room, which had some pretty bad scratches on the floor. It just needs to be re-sanded to repair. If you want to check for this, use a screwdriver or knife in one corner of the room and pull back the carpet to check. It IS a pain to take away all the carpet-nailed edging and moldings, but in the end we have nice hardwood floors.
