Fruits and Veggies

I saw the post about Fresh Direct and hope they will deliver to South Philly.

In the meantime, where do you ladies get fruits and veggies at a good price?  I think the supermarket is way overpriced.  $3.99 for a pound of grapes- I don't think so.  Is Trader Joes a good spot?

  • We live off of Produce Junction. The only issue is you get SO much for only 2 people. We try to give some to our parents and neighbors.

  • Try buying in season. It will be way cheaper.
  • It's tough because with fruits and veggies, I'd rather pay more to know that I'm getting quality.  Especially in the winter.  I find that even though it's expensive, I'd rather buy my veggies at Whole Foods than say, Shoprite, because things are always rotted and looking really bad when I go.  But I could also go at the wrong times. If I have to pay a dollar or two more, I'm comforted knowing that I'm paying for what I get (and it's usually organic).  I personally think the TJ's in the city is hit or miss on veggies.  It's such a small store and so heavily shopped that I've never been impressed with their produce.

In general, winters are hard but in the summer, I stock up at the farmers market in our 'hood in S. Philly on Sundays. Ditto Lachute on buying in season.

  • Oh, and I don't know how often you guys go into Jersey, but I am always happy with the quality of produce at Wegmans. I don't think the prices are better than any other supermarket, but they do push seasonal produce and you'll find good sales on it.  We try to get over there twice a month.

  • I will second the Wegman's rec.  I know it's not convenient to drive to NJ from SP on a regular basis, but I find their quality is much better than most of the other grocery stores (aside from WF) in my area.

  • Thanks ladies! I will definetly check out Wegman's. I'll be at home for 3 entire months for the first time since I was 15, so I am sure I will want to get out of the house once in a while, especially on the days when DH is off.

Or I can always give a shopping list to my favorite baby sister who works down the road from Wegman's in South Jersey.

  • Check out Fair Food Farmstand at the Reading Terminal Market, if you want locally grown items in season.

Iovine Bros in RTM also has a shitton of choices...the place is always nuts.  Most of it is conventionally grown from CA or Chile, but they do have a small selection of organic produce.
