Giant Eagle Fuel /Food Perks update

Original article, in case you didn't hear of the changes:

Giant Eagle customers will no longer be able to use Food Perks to save on groceries. The supermarket retailer is ending the popular program, but giving customers new ways to save on fuel. Giant Eagle will end their Food Perks Program on February 13th. Advantage Card holders must use any remaining discounts by May 31st, but they will continue to receive the 10 cents per gallon discount on gas when they spend $50 at GE. Company officials decided to discontinue the program after customers said it was too complex.

Update from GE regarding new incentive:

  • That's what Sheetz does - you get 3 cents off per gallon every time.  I just don't understand why they are using the excuse that the foodperks was "too confusing" for people.  Are people that dumb that getting a certain percentage off at the cash register was too hard to understand?
  • I rarely get on my soap box about anything but when I saw people on the news going on and on about how could GE do this to them and it is their right. Um no it is not. It is a PERK they created. Got me all fired up about how people think they are entitled to everything these days. Sure I used the food perks too. But if it goes away then shop somewhere else and move on.

    Stick out tongue

  • i never really earned much from Fuel Perks anyway, so I wasn't upset it its demise. I have a 14gal tank in my jetta, and it gets filled once every three or four weeks. K has a sonatta, so no guzzlers in the house. Plus we were not always loyal to the GetGo gas stations. I never had more than like 2 or 3% saved before I had to use the discount.

LOL. I totally agree with you. What is so confusing about it?

I couldn't care less if they do away with their programs. We don't really shop at Giant Eagle because they're too expensive, and I can usually get my gas cheaper at Sheetz or CoGos.

  • They are getting rid of it because it is too expensive but it sounds better to say it was confusing. They decided it is better to lower prices than to give a discount and with the new Common Cents doing well without any perk programs, they figure it was a good direction.

I do most of my shopping at GE, but rarely saved that much with Foodperks mostly because I would forget and the cashier never asked if I wanted to use them.

I rarely got that big of a discount because we aren't close to a Get-Go to build up a huge percentage, plus I have a 12 gallon tank. Nathan's truck(diesel) has a 30 gallon tank but we use Fuelperks to fill that thing and his FJ only has a 14 gallon tank.

I agree with Caron, some of the people on FB that were so irate where a bit ridiculous in their comments. They are letting you use them until May, its not like any discounts that were earned were wiped out.

    I'm sure this is true.

  • It doesn't really affect us, so we didn't think too much of it.  Although I agree about people going BSC and their sense of entitlement. (And not just in this case, with every little minute thing where people think the are "wronged" as a customer.)
  • For me, this is good, as I never accumulated much in the way of foodperks. Now on the rare occasion I go to GE outside of fuelperks, I'll get a little bit off. I think all of last year I saved maybe $6 on foodperks.

  • Glad I am not the only one who thought that! And you are talking to someone who just cashed in her 20% off last week. I did right before Christmas too for all our dinner needs for Christmas. I guess my longer commute has its perks. lol.

Same here Caron! DH has a 30-gallon tank and I have a 20-gallon tank. He fills up every 2-3 weeks, and I fill up every week with my commute. So I make sure we both fill up at GetGo.

It was a nice program while they offered it. I just won't go out of my way to fill up there now. And while GE can be more expensive than Aldis, Walmart and Bottom Dollar, if you shop their sales with double coupons, some of the deals just can't be beat.

Not the one by me! It is ridiculously more expensive, but S&S are independently owned and operated.

Same here, Kris! However, the guy who owns ours offers 2- and 3-day sales all of the time, it seems, so I shop those.
