Inexpensive DIY Christmas gift ideas

We have had to cut back in a big way this Christmas, but I still want to bring small inexpensive gifts to family that we couldnt buy bigger gifts for this year. Does anyone have any ideas for cute but inexpenisve DIY gifts?

Re: Inexpensive DIY Christmas gift ideas

  • I knit a lot of my gifts. Dishcloths are my quick and inexpensive.

A couple of years ago I got a jar with the dry ingredients and recipe for brownies. It was artfully poured in and they were super yummy.

  • you can always decorate a plain picture frame, and include a picture of you and DH, or some artsy picture you've taken. I don't like giving frames without a personal picture though, even if they take it out.

I am planning on making a loaf of Italian bread, homemade pasta and sauce and truffles for everyone that I would normally buy presents for.  There was a big post a while ago that had a ton of DIY ideas.  Let me see if I can find it.

    Love these, major.

Dev, I'm making rosemary-infused olive oil:

    Rosemary Infused Oil:

    1 cup olive oil

5 to 6 fresh rosemary sprigs (each 5 inches long)

Combine the oil and rosemary in a heavy small saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature. Transfer the sprigs to a 4-ounce bottle or cruet. Add the oil and seal the lid. Refrigerate for up to 1 month.

    Yield: 1 cup

  • One of the DiY gifts I'm making is bath salts. It's just epsom salt (or you could splurge on fancy sea salt), essential oil for fragrance and some food coloring. Find a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid and you're set.

You could also make a body scrub if you're not into bath salts. Use the epsom salt (or sugar) and blend with fragranced body wash; instant salt scrub!

  • We were going to do DIY, but by the time we bought all the stuff in order to make enough, we were going to be spending a pretty penny!  Instead, we decided to buy fairly inexpensive local gifts.  3 of my four siblings are getting spice sets from a local specialty spice store, and the other one is getting a fair trade coffee sampler from a local coffee roaster. We did a spice set for one friend and a coffee/cocoa/granola combo for another. We are baking cookies for some other friends. The prices were good, and we feel good that what we bought was directly helping local businesses.

  • I was going to copy major and do homemade pasta and home-jarred sauce, but I've got like 20-25 to do, and I'm just not that prolific.

So I'm doing the rosemary cornbread here: http://www.marthastewart.com/article/quick-breads-easy-presents?autonomy_kw=quick%20breads&rsc=header_1
