I'm hoping some of you can shed some light on what's been going on with G for the last 3-4 weeks.
After a very crazy stint as a newborn, around 10 weeks G started sleeping beautifully through the night. On average it was about 11-13 hours, even when I was still nursing. My supply dried up out of the blue one day (no exaggeration, I nursed him in the AM before work, pumped while at work, and when I tried to nurse him before bed DRY AS A BONE, never to have ounce of milk again)...anyway...so I stopped nursing at 7 months.
For the past 3-4 weeks G has been waking up 1-3 times a night. I've read that it could be 1 year molars or sleep regression or both. I know he's definitely dealing with some teeth issues b/c he's gnawing a lot and drooling like mad. He has 8 teeth and their arrival never really bothered him. I realize the molars are a different ball of wax.
We've gone through regression/discomfort periods before but they've never lasted this long and this seems so different.
He's not ill, as far as I can tell.
During the day his behavior is absolutely no different. The major change is at night. He will not go back to sleep unless one of us rocks him and gives him a bottle. He is pretty much inconsolable (much like he was as a newborn) until we give him a bottle. Not since he was about 12 weeks old has he expressed any desire to eat in the middle of the night.
I guess what I'm asking is...
What is weirder? That he never was a middle of the night eater? Or that now, at 11 months old he wants to eat in the middle of the night? Or is the bottle/sucking comforting to him and that's why he's so nutty until he gets the bottle?
And just to clarify, we usually give him a bottle the first time he wakes, if he wakes more than once, one of use usually roams around the house with him for 1-2 hours.
I'm really freaked out about this drastic change in behavior. Is it normal for something like this to last for weeks? Can sleep regression/teeth really change their behavior that much?
If this doesn't stop by next week, I'm going to call the pediatrician. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance. I know this is long, I appreciate you reading to the end ![]()
TIA!
Re: 11 months - waking in the middle of the night? Sleep Regression? Teeth?
Molars are the worst. I would blame them. And teething can be worse at night when there isn't the rest of life distracting them from the discomfort. As I recall EJ's sleep was pretty terrible around that time too. Just after her 1st birthday she was cutting molars, had a cold (or 4) and was sleeping in our bed again more than her own. Then as sudden as it started, at 14 months she was STTN again and back in her room.
So I vote normal and annoying.
Logan did almost this exact same thing for about 3 weeks. He would wake up shrieking out of no where and he was always a fantastic sleeper. He was also the exact same kid during the day. It seems to have subsided, but it was rough for a while there.
Totally agree! DD is in the process of getting her 2 year molars and it' the same thing. Fine during the day, waking up all hours of the night.
Sarah, I'm so sorry you guys were dealing with this too. It gives me great hope since Logan eventually worked himself out of it.
Thanks, ladies. I can always count on you to simmer me down
I just hope for his and our sake, he gets over this soon. I'm like a damn zombie.
If you see Tim ask him about it. We were definitely in zombie land for a while. We would hold our breath when we heard him stirring and inevitably it would lead to a freak out instead of calming down.
No teeth ever resulted from it, so who knows what was going on.
