Monday Madness

Lets talk about ..... Home Decor

Re: Monday Madness

  • One of my favorite topics to talk about!

I posted awhile back about tiling my fireplace with mirror tiles.  Here is the picture link: http://tinyurl.com/azxmvnj

Anyways, I have FINALLY finished all the tiling.  I ordered grout color samples, have picked out the grout (a slate gray with a hint of blue in it), and the grout should arrive this week!  Hopefully I'll get the whole thing grouted this weekend so I can be DONE with this project, which I started in October.

And I did another random project yesterday.  I really dislike our light fixtures, not necessarily the style but the color of the glass shades is awful!  The shades are painted/tinted that ugly light brown color that is not only ugly but doesn't let as much light through, and the light then has a dingy quality to it.  I actually have new light fixtures already picked out, but we really don't NEED to spend a few hundred dollars on them at this point.

Anyways, I was googling about possible ways to take the finish off yesterday and came across nail polish remover as one of the suggestions.  It worked like a charm!  I did the chandelier in our kitchen and our 2 pendant lights.  It makes the entire light fixture look SO different and both rooms are so much brighter with clean light.  And the best part is, it cost me pretty much nothing!

We also bought new cabinet hardware this weekend and installed it.  It is so much more contemporary than our old stuff.  Love it!

After I finish our fireplace project, I am going to paint the dinette/entry hallway/kitchen a light gray color.  Then we are going to install a backsplash.  This is the current front runner for tile: http://pinterest.com/pin/15551561184771490/

I love home decorating, can't you tell? =]

  • We have been working on our house for the past year, and finally it feels like we're getting somewhere! The people that lived here previously were older, and hadn't painted in years. They had re-done the kitchen in '05, but the flooring was awful!

A few weeks ago we had bamboo hardwood installed and it looks amazing! The whole house feels cleaner, bigger, and brighter! We put down a few area rugs...one under the dining table and one in the living room to define and soften the space. I am slowly putting decor back up, and we have to paint the entryway and one bedroom. Eventually we have to tackle the main bath and replace the floor, vanity, and top. Possibly the tub since it's a light avocado green.

Now I am trying to decide on what to put up on the walls! I can't put shelving up easily because every wall in this house has a bow in it! I bought some shelving for the office, but discovered a major bow in the wall and had to relocate the shelves. It worked out, but they're not where I intended them to go.

As soon as I get something up, I change it anyway. I'm always moving stuff around!

  • For the wedding we got all kinds of frames and I am slowly getting them hung up and finally getting my living room decorated. For so long it was furniture and curtains and a tv with a shelf that was it! Now we have up a candle set, 2 big pictures, and a sign which will eventually have other stuff around it.

Also I'm working on trying to get my bathroom more organized. We have floor to ceiling cabinets that are super organized and I have a hanging shelf above the toilet. But it's such a small space and my straightner is ALWAYS out so I want some hooks on the side of the cabinet to hang that kind of stuff on. And then maybe some art to give it more color.

Also we have an American Flag that was from H's grandfathers ( who he never met) funeral. So we got the little triangle shadow box and then realized it has to be sitting somewhere you can hang it and I have NO where to hang it so H is going to put in some stuff to hang it up on the wall.

The more stuff I get hung up the more it will clean out our guest room and in turn make more space!!!

  • Ooo! perfect timing, I was going to ask you ladies a question this week anyway!

Okay... the siding on our house is kinda this color... (sagey-green) (FYI that is NOT our house haha)

Picture of siding colour... (stupid TB not letting me put a picture in!)

    image

And with the green we have cedar on the side of the house... more cedar than siding i'd say. Hubby and I want to paint our walk-in doors (two on the house, two on the garage...garage is not attached to the house). MIL and I are thinking a DARK blue would look really good... like navy with a hint of grey. What do you guys think?

On other home decor topics... the inside of our current house is nearing completion.. which means we'll be able to start on the church house soon!

    Yay!!!

So I had a hard time envisioning it, do you meant a color scheme somewhat like this?  (But with a darker/grayer navy?  I realize it isn't a house but it's just for the colors :)

I think that the grey/navy could work.  But I also love the high contrast in your linked photo with the white.  What if you painted the door navy, but the door frame white to make it pop against the cedar & green?  Kind of like this:

Very much like the second link! The doors are white right now, and I so badly want to paint them a colour.. As far as I know we would leave the frames white and JUST paint the door. I really like the colour that's in that picture!

I'm fairly certain that around the door is going to be all cedar.. the siding won't be there..

Anyone elses input is more than welcome!
