Question about baby sleep habits

Okay, so I have a serious question, and I'm aware that the answer might be, "Shut up, a$$hole, and enjoy it." That said...

On Saturday night, DS slept for over 13.5 hours, and then took 2 2-hour naps during the day -- one of which we woke him up from. This is a pretty typically routine on the weekends.

During the week he sleeps about 12 hrs before I have to wake him up to go to daycare/work, and naps much less at daycare. I'd say 2 hrs total on average, split between 2 or 3 naps.

So my question is, is there such thing as too much sleep? Is he maybe catching up on the weekends from not napping enough at daycare?

We have his 9-month pediatrician appt on Saturday, so I'll ask her too, but wanted to ask the mommy collective in the meantime.

Re: Question about baby sleep habits

  • I say just go with it.  He might be catching up, he might be going through a growth spurt.  If he is sleeping, he needs it.

My rule is to never wake a sleeping baby.

  • My kid is like this too.  He just loves his sleep.  He's sleep more during a growth spurt, but overall he sleeps an average of 13 hours a night with an hour and a half to two hour nap every day.  Some babies just like it.  You're blessed :)
  • Little L always did that when she was going through a growth spurt. As long as he's not sick I would let him sleep and check on him every once in a while.

i remember the first time she did that I was terrified something was wrong - she took like a  9 hour nap, got up, ate and went back to sleep for the night.

  • I actually avoid talking about sleep habits with our sleep deprieved friends because my DD is the same.  She is now 15 months old so she is down to one nap (atleast during the week).  She goes down sometime between 7:30 and 8:30 then she sleeps until I wake up her up for daycare between 6 and 630.  On weekends she sleeps until 7:30 normally.  She has been doing this since she was probably 7 weeks old or so.   On the weekends if we are home, she will easy take either one 2 plus hour nap or two small naps.  At daycare she typically takes an hour nap in the afternoon.  She honestly loves curling up in her crib and she is out.  I don't think there is anything wrong and I'm sure you are loving your sleep too!
  • Oliver used to sleep like this too...enjoy it while you can in case it doesn't last forever (now Oliver wakes up 1-2x each night asking for books, cups of water, and songs!

  • You are questioning that your child is an awesome sleeper?

I am pretty sure you are insane ;)

  • Thanks, ladies. I figured the answer was probably that I should just appreciate my sleep, but when he was asleep for 17+ hours out of a 24 hour period, I thought it was worth asking :)

  • My son is the same way.  We just let him sleep as long as he wants now.  I figure He knows what he needs.

  • Was he always a good napper?

DD is a horrible napper and I am praying that she will grow out of it at some point. She might take 3 or 4 15-30 min naps at daycare.  At home we get 30 mins out of her most days, unless she is in the stroller.  I have been known to wander around Target for over an hour because I know she will wake up as soon as we walk outside and the cold air hits her.

It sucks because most weeknights she is in meltdown mode from the time I pick her up to the time she goes to bed.  DH barely sees her at night and she's always miserable by the time he gets home.  The past week she has been so cranky that she barely makes it to 6:30.
