Holy snow, Batman!

I hope you are all safe and warm, and weathering the storm with your loved ones! We should share some post-storm photos, and give our snow totals, when all is said and done! But, for now, stay safe, ladies!

Re: Holy snow, Batman!

  • We got off easy here - only a foot, power stayed on, def on the easy side of the storm (which, after Snowtober 2011 and Sandy, it's about time we were) --- all plowed out, paid the neighbor's plow guy to do our driveway b/c just too much. Streets are plowed and mostly melted already!

  • Our power is still on, which I am so thankful for.  We got about 2 feet of snow.  DH just went our to start shoveling, because today the snowblower decided not to start.  I'm planning on being stuck in the rest of the weekend.
  • We're ok. Power stayed on and no downed trees. We got 27 inches of snow. Dh has the driveway cleared and is starting in on a path around the house to clear off the porches. Will take pics when DS goes outside after his nap.

  • We still have power. Got at least 28", and our road has been cleared as of about 11am. We have big construction vehicles that clear the snow. Very cool to watch. I'll upload some pics tonight. Hoping to get outside with my kids in a bit.

  • I take that back - there's well over a foot out there. Measurements on the deck totally not accurate!! Probably closer to 18" here, according to the plow guy.

  • My kids are both still not 100%, so we didn't get outside to play today (neither of them really wanted to, anyways). However, I did manage to get a few pictures of the clean out process.

After doing an initial clearing of the driveway last night when there was about 13" out there, we got at least another 15"

  • DH cleared 3 inches or so on Friday night, and then we got about 2 feet overnight, so these pics are of him clearing that. Here's my "husband trying to find the mailbox" shot!

This is an 11' wide section of driveway that's ~110' long, and there's a 20' wide 70' long section behind the house to the right of where I took this pic. (Yes, i know it's odd to know the dimensions of the driveway, but we had it paved a year ago and for some reason the numbers are still in my head)

We had about a foot blown onto the porches, and snow stuck to the house on all sides.

The sustained winds were so bad overnight Friday that the icicles that formed by the back door were at an angle...

And DH had a lot of fun playing with DS in the snow. Maybe more fun than DS had! A fort (made mostly by DH with the snowblower):

  • looks like I am the only one that lost power :(

I was planning on being snowed in and stuck inside all day Saturday cooking up a storm etc.

We lost power at 7ish on Friday night, before this the lights flickered so I told DH to jack up the heat. We put the heat to 85, so when the power went out about 7 we were able to stay moderatly warm all night. I woke up about 5 am with chills and checked the house was about 65. That wasn't bad at all. The day went on and I spent most of the day in my jacket, DH was outside shoveling out our cars. By the time it was 48 degrees in our apartment.

The day went on and National Grid said it didn't look good, two transformers blew. So we packed up and braved the roads after the ban was up in our accord. I'm not sure how we made it, but we made it to my parents, 5 miles away...it took about 30 minutes. Note to self: as soon as our accord with 200k miles on it craps the bed...we will be investing in some kind of all wheel drive or SUV.

Anyway, we got a notice that our power came back on at 930 pm!! whoot, so we headed home and again cranked the heat and were able to sleep at home in our own bed.

Unfortunately I lost about half of the food i bought in preperation for the storm. Including the last half gallon of milk that dave's had that cost me $4.79!! But I did get to spend much of yesterday cooking up all teh meat that defrosted and made a great chicken soup and beef stew and some chili!

I didn't get a chance to take many pics but here is one of the dog walking in the walls of snow! She thought they made the pathway just for her, and was a happy camper :)

  • My parents lost power at about 9:30pm on Friday, and their power was restored on Sunday around 11:30am. They spent one night at home, then my sister came and picked them up so they could have a hot meal and warm bed until their electricity was back. I'm so glad my sister lives close enough to have been able to help her out! I felt so helpless being here, knowing my parents were getting colder and colder.

  • One more pic. Finally got to take the kids outside for a while today. They aren't 100% (neither am I) but the fresh air was good for us all. Hopefully it's clicky so that if you want to see it bigger, you can.

  • When the snow cooperates, I look forward to tackling the sculptures my kids ask for! After the rain, the snow was perfect for this creation!
