Permanent makeup?

So this is kind of a random post, but here there's an idea seed that's been growing at the back of my mind for awhile...

I'm planning on getting Lasik in the next year or so.  I'm currently rocking glasses/contact lenses with a prescription of -7, so I'm kind of blind!

As such, makeup is a must if I'm going to wear contact lenses since my eyelashes are so light colored it doesn't look like I have any if I don't put mascara on.  I don't wear a lot, just eyeliner and mascara but it makes a huge difference.

However, whenever I am wearing my glasses I don't usually wear makeup because a) It's not as noticeable, b) I'm lazy, and c) I have to give my eyes/skin around my eyes a break from the makeup.  I've tried all kinds of makeup (organic, mineral, etc.) but I have eczema and it is just irritating to my skin.

I know a couple of people who have their makeup tattooed on.  For me, I'd just consider eyeliner.  And I know my BM who had lash extensions put on for her wedding and LOVED them (when you have them, you don't need to wear mascara).  I know you have to have them filled every other month or so, but if I didn't have to put on/take off mascara every day it'd be totally worth it.

I know people say "well, what if you want to change it??".  Well, I've been doing the same thing essentially for the 15 years or so I've been wearing makeup.  I'd just have a simple brown eyeliner tattooed.  The nice thing is you can always add regular makeup on top of it.

Anyways, there are a couple makeup artists in my area where the tattooing is all they do.  I know there are precautions out there to take, making sure the ink is pure, needles are new, etc. but these are reputable places and not someone's basement.

I was just wondering if anyone has had anything like this done.  The thought of one day waking up without having to put contact lenses in or makeup on is awesome!  Especially in situations where regular makeup would run, like at the lake or on vacation.

Re: Permanent makeup?

  • I honestly had no idea that this is even possible!

I like the idea of eyeliner tattooed on because I'm the WORST at putting the stuff on myself.

I think I'd be afraid of being stabbed in the eye with the needle, but I'm weird about eyes...I don't like anything coming near mine, not even eye drops, it freaks me out!

I'm the same way, but I figured if I can have eyelid retractors a la Clockwork Orange shoved into my eyes, my cornea flapped up with a scalpel, and lasers shot into my eyes, I can deal with a little tattooing on the outside of the eyelid later...apparently most artists use anesthetic, too so it doesn't hurt much.

On every website for an artist that has testimonials, "the only regret I have is not doing it sooner!" seems to be the sentiment.

  • I had Lasik a few years ago, check with them before you do the tattoos. I wasn't allowed to wear make up for like 2 weeks before & after.

  • My mom has her eyeliner tattooed on!

She loves it, and said it really didn't hurt much. She got her lips done at the same time, and said she would never do that again!

I was planning on having the makeup done after the Lasik =]

Speaking of Lasik, how was it?  I'll admit that I'm pretty freaked out by it, I made the mistake of watching a Lasik surgery on TV a few years ago....

Sabrina - I can imagine that the lips wouldn't be pleasant!  I think I'll stick to my tinted lip balm.

I loved it and I would do it again in a heart beat. I had a really hard time with the actual procedure. I only had the "real Lasik" done in my right eye, I had to do a surface PRK on my left eye (Surface PRK actually gives you better vision. I guess it is the only procedure they allow for active military when they do Lasik) because they were unable to get the flap required for the Lasik. They did break almost every blood vessel on the surface of my eye and I looked really creepy for weeks. I know it sounds/seems scary but I would definitely recommend it to you/anyone. It sounds crazy, and people without glasses don't get it, but it changed my life. I can actually ENJOY things I couldn't before.

  • I think it would be awesome to never have to put on eyeliner!  I don't think I could every do it though.  One I switch btw black and brown eyeliner and two I am freaked out of anything near my eye.  I could never do Lasik though also.

It sounds like permanent eyeliner might be a good choice for you though.  You will have to tell us how it goes if you do it!

  • I have permanent eyebrows!

I got them done last July and I LOVE them. Naturally I had very very light eyebrows and they had No shape. I was SO self concious of them. I would have to draw them in with an eyebrow pencil and I HATED doing it. So I researched a professional and found one in my area that had Great reviews. My eyebrows are awesome!

And just to state for the record. Its not an actual tattoo. If your getting it done by the right person who knows what they are doing they dont use an actual tattoo ink. Its a pigment powder that has been diluted with saline solution to make it a liquid to use with the 'tattoo' gun. I definitely recommend it.

If your worried about the pain. Dont. If you go to a person who knows what they are doing they will use a topical anesthetic cream that numbs the area.

But I dont have my eyeliner done. I dont know if I could let someone get that close to my eyeball. I wear contacts and everything and thats no big deal. But I dont know about at 'tattoo' gun that close! LOL But I say go for it. But seriously research it to find the right person!

  • My aunt has her eyeliner tattooed on. She recently retired but she used to work in a pharmaceutical plant and was not allowed to wear any kind of makeup so she got it tattooed on. She still loves it, and she had it done about 15 years ago.

I say go for it! As for the fake eyelashes, a lot of my friends do it. Apparently it's a bit of a pain to keep going for refiils but they look really nice.

  • I've known quite a few people that have had laser eye surgery, and no one has had anything bad to say about it, they all said it was completely worth it.  I plan to do it myself, someday.

About the makeup, however, I don't think I would ever do that.  I'd probably get a boob job before I ever had permanent makeup applied.  But, it sounds like you've already got your mind made up anyway.

Good luck, and post pics if you get it done, I'm always curious.

  • Wow, I feel much better about Lasik and the permanent makeup now =]  I posted fully expecting a "WTF?" from everyone, but I was pleasantly surprised!

If I go through with it it won't be for awhile, since my eye doc wants me to wait another year before Lasik to make sure my eyes have stabilized and aren't continuing to get a lot worse.

But for those wanting pics, this is the website to her gallery.  She has a list of like 20 physicians that recommend her to their patients, so that makes me feel better!
