starting solids

So yesterday we gave DD some avocado and she loved it!  She has been getting brown rice cereal for the past 2 weeks as well - she's not really a fan but will eat it.

We plan on doing BLW sometime next month (she'll be 6 months), but for now I want to focus on purees.  We are going away in March and I want to be able to bring pouches of puree with me.

Last night I prepped some stuff - baked a giant sweet potato, steamed some carrots and peas.  Froze them all in ice cube trays.

What are some other veggies you started with?  And you do all the veggies before fruits, right?

Once she tries a bunch of different foods (with no allergic reactions), what combos are good?

Re: starting solids

  • Green Beans, Cauliflower (to thicken up thin purees), Squash, and Zucchini (comes out real watery - so I mixed with thicker things).

I mixed based on consistency... but he ate the weird combinations that were made.

  • I echo squash.  I loved it because it was so mild in flavor that I could mix it with other things like peas or green beans to get him used to the newer foods.

Can't believe you're already at solids!!

Ah...I know.  Last night H was giving the sweet potato dirty looks as I mashed it up and I said "it won't be long before she's eating sweet potato fries with us".  Then we both got sad, haha.

When you say squash...do you mean butternut or the long yellow squash?  I guess I could do either.

  • I think my doctor is doing things differently than everyone else's- I was told with DD to do cereal/oatmeal, then move on to fruits then veggies.  Wonder what they'll tell me at DS's 6 month appointment next month...

Some doctor's are moving away from cereal/oatmeal as a first food because it typically has no nutritional value (rice cereal especially) and it can constipate babies.  Also, some recommend waiting until at least 6 months to start solids so their digestive systems are strong enough that they can skip cereals and move right to fruits and veggies.

We did BLW at 6 months at J's first foods were avocado, baked sweet potato sticks and banana.

At our breastfeeding group, we were told fruits first also... as they are sweeter and more like breastmilk.

I had heard about the cereals before with that- wonder if the Dr. will bring it up this time. I didn't give Aisling anything other than breastmilk until 6 months- same with Declan (so far, no need for formula or anything to supplement- hoping to make it to March 18!). But I do have friends whose doctors told them start solids at 4 months.

Hmm...maybe that's why I was told fruits, since my daughter (and now my son) was EBF until beginning solids...

  • Interesting about fruits first.  My pedi said veggies first because then they are more likely to turn their nose up at veggies after they've been given all the sweet fruits.

  • Starting solids at 4 months in EBF babies can lead to early weaning...

  • We completely skipped cereal. I felt like it was pointless and it tastes like crap. I was giving an iron supplement so there really was no need.

I've never heard of fruits before veggies or vice versa. I think it's just preference. I did both at the same time, personally. You can overload them with fiber and constipated them though so be careful. And solids at this age should only be for practice - primary source of nutrition should be bm or formula til 1. I personally wasn't in a hurry bc making food is kind of a pita. It's so much easier to give a bottle or boob for as long as possible!
