One or two car seats?

Our daily routine is that I drop DS off at daycare, and DH picks him up. He works 7-4 and I work 8:30-5:30, so it has to be that way.

For the first 8 months, DS was in an infant carrier, which I brought into daycare every day and left there. We each had a base for it in our cars. However, I have a bad lower back, and it was starting to be too much for me to cart him around in, so we got a convertible seat that now lives in my car. Until DS grows out of the infant seat, that one will stay in DH's car.

DH just asked me what happens when he grows out of that seat, and my response was that we'll have to get a second convertible seat. He thinks I'm crazy and that I should be taking the convertible seat out and leaving it at daycare for him every day. I think that's insane.

Please weigh in.

Re: One or two car seats?

  • I agree with you,  it'll be too much hassel in the am, (and pm) to get the kid out, then the seat, cart them both into the center, and then do it all over again at the end of the day.
  • Hands down... Two seats. You have 2 cars that are used daily.

  • Definitely get a second car seat!  Trying to install and unistall those things is a pain in the butt when you are rushing and lugging a toddler around!  It will be the best $200 or so dollars you will ever spend!  If you are thinking ahead on this, start looking for sales and coupons to pick up the second one.  We have a convertible in each car and it's the greatest thing- seriously!

  • We were in the same situation and I agree with everyone on getting two seats. Convertibles are a PITA to take in and out so it is definitely not worth the hassle.
  • Agreed.  2 seats.  There is no argument or discussion.  We have the same type of routine.  H does drop off and I do pick up.  We switched him out of the infant carrier around 6 months and it has been glorious ever since.
  • When we had two cars we had two seats, much easier. Now we have one car but two Grammies involved so we have three seats ... well six

  • Agreed, two seats no question.  It also just helps on the weekend sometimes too.  So whoever is with the kid has a carseat if needed.  Besides inconvenience, if you were moving your car seat back and forth everyday I would worry about safety and if it's always getting 100% installed properly.
  • Ditto all.  Two seats is the way to go.

  • We too will have a similar dilemma.  I think you are ok with one infant seat, but definetly two convertibles.

Check out Target, especially on Mondays (when they mark down the baby items).  You may be able to score a nice one relatively cheap.  I've also seen some nice good name ones at Wal-Mart at a decent price.

  • I have a quick way to fix your little issue.

Try it a few days his way. He'll see it's such a pain in the ass to safely install a huge lumpy carseat.

I can almost guarantee it won't last and you'll convince him to get a second seat in no time!

Also, you don't have to get the same seat for both cars. We have a less expensive seat for my DH's car - it's still safe just less frills.

  • Thanks, everyone! Glad to hear I'm not crazy. I think we'll likely get a less expensive one for his car (we have a fancy Britax in mine), because my car is definitely our primary vehicle, so DS will rarely be in the other one except for the 5 minute ride home from DC.

DH did make the point that this means we can't have someone pick the baby up from DC in a pinch b/c they won't have a seat to put him in, but I'm not terribly concerned about that.

  • Google "cheap second car seats" or something like that -- I found a list and ended up buying an Evenflo Triumph as our second seat for my mom's car.  Keep the bad ass expensive one in the car you use the most.

  • Not that you need any more people telling you to get 2, but here's one other point- DH and I each have a convertible seat for A and a carrier base for D in our cars.  Right before I had D, we took our cars over to one of those carseat safety checks- we were told ours were way wrong, and we are careful people who read directions and took our time installing.  I wouldn't want to think about how poorly isnstalled a seat could become if it's in and out all the time.

  • Have your hubs bring the car seat in over the weekend, and then put it back in when you want to go out somewhere.  While carrying the child.  I am sure that will change his mind real quick.
