Honeymoon After Half a Year of Marriage
My DH and I were on a tight budget for our wedding in October, so we never took a honeymoon. Thanks to our tax refund, we are taking it this summer! Yay!
Thing is, we don't know where. We are still not rolling in dough and we don't have passports so no place that requires one. We are living in IL, open to driving or flying. We are considering Charleston, SC. I would love to spend time on a beach but not the whole time, cuz its not really the DH's thing. Something romantic. Any suggestions??

Re: Honeymoon After Half a Year of Marriage
DH and I were in a similar position. We were married in October but he was in grad school and couldn't take time off after the wedding. I work retail and couldn't take time off in December. There wasn't a time for us to take a honeymoon until the following summer. We planned it like a honeymoon and even referred to it as our honeymoon, however it felt just like any other vacation when it was all said and done. I want to warn you that it probably won't feel the same as it would have immediately after the wedding. I just don't want you to be disappointed.
That being said, what about the Boston/New England area? You guys could look at staying in a few charming B&Bs and the possibilities are endless for activities. There are some great beaches up there for you. Boston has so much history (as well as aquariums, museums, etc. like many cities) to offer if cities appeal to you. On top of that, there are tons of options for hiking and exploring the outdoors if that appeals to you. We have been to the White Mountains in New Hampshire and loved it. Our absolute favorite place was Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, ME.
As for Charleston? I've never been but it is on my travel bucket list for sure.
Vacations are what you make of them. I have yet to travel to some place that I didn't enjoy! I hope you and your new husband have a wonderful time!
I would suggest checking cheapcaribbean.com for Puerto Rico - no passports and I just saw a few deals on there this afternoon for PR since they are having a big sale on the website.
The suggestion of New England is also a good one.
Puerto Rico is a great idea! Plus you have the rainforests and lots of stuff to do. Old San Juan is a lot of fun. If that's too much money, SC is another great option or Martha's Vineyard/Cape Cod. USVI's are amazing and no passport but might cost a little more money. You could always rent a condo to save a little money but still get to stay on an amazing island.

I live in Charleston and it is a wonderful Honeymoon spot if you like historic towns, food, beaches, and more food. There are tons of cute boutique hotels and bed and breakfasts located downtown, or a gazillion hotels just outside of downtown where you could stay for very cheap. You can take a ghost tour, carriage ride tour, walking tours, boat tours, etc lots of touring can occur, haha. Of course, in summer time I would not be caught dead sitting on a crowded carriage in the heat, maybe a boat tour. There are also awesome dinner cruises that go around the harbor so you can see the fancy houses along the battery from the water. There are three main beaches: Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms, they get more expensive in the order I listed.
The other option people keep mentioning is San Juan, PR. I've been there and it was really fun. Feels a lot more exotic than Charleston, but it's not that expensive and no passport required.
You can chose the Thailand that is the favorite place for young ones to come and enjoy. It's really a cool and nice place with the best establishment of Samui vecation villas.

It's good to participate in the discussions!
Thanks for the advice everyone!
I think we're looking at a roadtrip to Charleston, SC, and then down to Savannah, GA before coming home. We will probably plan a few nights in Charleston and then wing it from there.
Someone mentioned getting passports, and the reason we don't is because they cost $165 ea. and that would significantly cut into our budget. Even the cheapest all inclusives, once you add passports and flights, are out of range.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. I'll have to let you know how it goes!
