Costa Rica, anyone?!

My DH & I are thinking of going to Costa Rica in June (end of June)...any tips, suggestions, thoughts, etc?! We've only traveled internationally to Mexico and Canada, and are looking to explore a little more this time!

Thanks!

Re: Costa Rica, anyone?!

  • How long are you planning on going for?

I traveled to Costa Rica about two years ago with my friend for eight days. We spent half our time in La Fortuna/Arenal and the other half on the Nicoya Peninsula in the beautiful beach town of Nosara. If you've got at least a week, I would split your time between a rain forest locale (i.e. La Fortuna/Arenal or Monteverde) and somewhere on the ocean (Manual Antonio is a popular choice, but you could also stay in the Nicoya Peninsula area). I've got two entries in my travel blog on the trip here: http://wanderlusttraveler.blogspot.com/search/label/Costa Rica

  • Costa Rica is a wonderful place to visit.  We also split our time between different places and I highly recommend it, since CR is such a geographically diverse country.  To get around the country from place to place, I would highly recommend flying with Nature Air, the domestic airline. They fly between San Jose and most of the main tourist spots in the country, and it is a great way to see the countryside as well.  We stayed in the Heredia (near San Jose) and Nicoya Pinensula areas and flew N.A. between the two.  Just be aware that June is the "green season" in CR, and it might rain frequently, depending where you go (the Nicoya peninsula is generally drier than the rest of the country).  We loved CR so much we can't wait to go back and see more of it.
  • dh took me for a week for my birthday at the end of july a few years ago. we didn't go to a bunch of different areas. we went to relax and take a few day trips and that's what we did. it was great. which area do you want to visit? for how long?
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • Yep!  We went for two weeks in June 2011.  We visited the cloud forest, Arenal, the OSA Peninsula, and Uvita.  I definitely recommend seeing more than one place and exploring/having a variety of types of experiences.
  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I think we're going for about a week. We'd like to stay in one spot, but take some day trips to other areas. Off to research I go!

  • I would highly recommend Costa Rica. We stayed at Puerto Viejo & Manuel Antonio. They are almost on complete opposite sides but we loved both of them! Here is my blog post on Costa Rica. Have a great trip!

  • We went for our honeymoon this past November and loved it! We stayed at an AI in the Papagayo gulf area and did a day trip in the middle of our week to Arenal through CAT Tours. June is the middle of the rainy season there, so you'll probably get little to no sunbathing time. GL!

  • DH and I went for two weeks in late Aug - early Sept 2012, fell in love with Costa Rica, can't wait to go back for more! Amazing natural beauty, wildlife, friendly people... We flew in and out of Liberia and visited 5 places: Rincon de la Vieja, Bijagua (close to Tenorio/Rio Celeste), Monteverde, Arenal, and Playa Hermosa. We found these to be great resources for itineraries, booking transportation, discounts and such: anywherecostarica.com and puravidaeh.com. Enjoy!

  • We went for our belated honeymoon back in Nov 2011. Flew in to San Jose. Used anywherecostarica.com for our transportation. Stayed at Tabacon Hot Springs resort in Arenal. Did day trips - El Toro rafting in class 3 -4 rapids with Dasofio (fantastic trip), hanging bridges combo tour with anywherecostarica. Then spent 4 nights in Nicoya Peninsula in Montezuma at Ylang Ylang Beach resort. Great food, secluded beach, they have a town hotel too that is cheaper but you can use the pool, beach, etc at the beach hotel. Did a horseback ride to the falls (great), snorkeling trip which was just ok, and a romantic private dinner on the beach which was not that expensive compared to other places.
  • I lived in Panama for 2 years and have traveled extensively throughout Costa Rica.

I agree that you should spend part of your time at the beach (Quepos) and part of the time in the rain forest.  I loved Nicoya Peninsula and Manuel Antonio.  I also suggest spending a bit of time in San Jose.  Fun city!

However, I am in love with Panama and would suggest it over Costa Rica any day.
