Daycare

I know this has been asked before... but over my February break I am going to be looking into daycares. I'm still hoping to be a SAHM but I need to make sure there is a plan in case we can't swing it.

What questions should I ask daycare centers? What should I be looking for? We'd need to send a 8 week old:( It's already hurting my heart.

Should I try to look at home daycares too? How do you know they are not shady?!

Thanks:)

Re: Daycare

  • Day Care Questionnaire:

    1. Hours/Days - 9/10 months (just the school year) or full year, 12 months?
    2. Cost? What does it include? Late pick up charge?
    3. Can we start early a week in August (like, the last week of August) to acclimate ourselves and baby to daycare before work starts?
    4. Kid to adult ratio
    5. Activities/Daily schedule
    6. Food - can we bring our own, if not, what is offered/served? (I'm sure this applies more to when they're eating solids, but just wanna be prepared.)
    7. Closings - specifically snow days (since we don't get them.)
    8. Pay to hold spot on waitlist? How much?
    9. Pay to hold spot in summertime? How much?
    10. Certified/licensed/accredited
    11. First aid/CPR training?
    12. Sick kid policy (Can they come? Do I pay for days they stay home?)
    13. Discipline?
    14. Security and emergency policies
    15. Can I make unannounced visits to see my child?
    16. Staff turnover rate
    17. Do children ever leave daycare grounds? (Trips in cars, buses)
    18. Billing policy? Income tax receipts?
    19. List of references.
    20. How much notice is needed if we need to switch day cares?
    21. Security to get into center
    22. Authorized pickup - how are these people IDed?
    23. Do babies have a schedule or do they just do whatever?
    24. How often are toys cleaned?
    25. Do we get reports of feedings, naps, dirty diapers, etc.?
    26. Sibling discount?
    27. What items are parents asked to provide?

    Hope these help!

  • We use an in home provider.  I found her through a website that lists licensed providers. I googled for sample questions.

We also asked about cloth diapers since we were planning to use them. I also asked about part time care in the summer.  I am probably going to SAH, but at the time we were looking, it was an important question.

You will get a feeling and just know if it's a good place or not.  We toured a center that I would never send Z to, ever. It wasn't super clean, the outside area sucked, and the one worker in the room couldn't be bothered to pretend to interact with the 2 babies that were there (we went on a holiday).

I love DS' provider. She treats the kids like they are her own. They go out and do stuff (she took them to Chuckee Cheese a couple weeks ago), and I like that DS is with a variety of ages.
