Healthy

What do you do to be healthy?

I made the awful mistake of weighing myself when I'm already stressed tonight and I've gained a few pounds. I am now the heaviest I have ever been and freaking out that I let go of myself even more.

I am horrible at counting calories. I try "just eating healthy foods" but the foods don't stay very healthy for long. I'm wondering about Weight Watchers and if the point system is a little easier than checking the calories on everything I eat.

What healthy habits do you have? What do you make a point of doing to stay in shape? How do you stay motivated? I want to hear all sorts of ideas.

Re: Healthy

  • I'll contribute an idea to start just in case anyone else wants to try something new. A FB friend posted this the other day and like how visual it is:

thats a neat idea. Love how visual it is. I have had to cut out a crazy amount of foods since I have IBS. Try cutting out corn syrup & high fructose corn syrup and cutting back on glutten. It will really change the way you eat. I'm not saying you should do that but cutting out something that is in most foods will really get you conscious about what you eat.

I purchased some ballet Barr classes on groupon and living social. Then you have to use it or loose it.

Thats the best I have. It's not great advice or ideas but that's it.

  • I'm probably not the best person to ask, because I usually don't stick with anything, ha.  I haven't been to the gym in probably over a month... but actually brought my gym bag to work so I can go at lunch.  But - we'll see if that actually happens.

I know a lot of girls have used sparkpeople (I think that's what its called).  I've started using supertracker at choosemyplate.gov.  I don't get into it all the time, but I like that it breaks up the different food groups telling you how much to eat of what.

  • I use myfitnesspal.  I don't keep track of all my calories, but I will do it in spurts.  I also try to get to the gym at least 3-4 times a week.  I'm not much help either!

  • If you think that an online tracker would work for you try it. My fitness pal is free. I found it personally to be overwhelming because I got preoccupied with tracking everything I ate. I had a hard time figuring out how to put in things I made at home that weren't pre-packaged.

Maybe see if there are gyms around you that offer free trials and see if there's a class you really like or buy a groupon to try a limited number of classes. I used to play soccer twice a week and because it was something I looked forward to it was easier to be committed to it each week.

  • Finding something you love to do exercise-wise is important. I've learned over the years that I hate going outside of the house to work out. Once I'm home, I'm done and I don't want to go out again. But if I'm sitting on my butt at home just watching tv, I will get the motivation to work out. So having something at home is important for me (elliptical, videos and such). Also, I walk home from work, which is a 30-35 minute walk, so even when I don't work out, I've at least done something 5 days a week.

So maybe try a few different classes, use Groupon deals and such... it's all trial and error. I did the gym thing for awhile, but I had to go right after work or else I often just wouldn't go. And I found that I would never do classes at the gym or elsewhere. I hated having that kind of commitment for some reason (even though I'm totally type A and I love planning things and having a routine... go figure!). Although I did buy a Groupon deal for hot yoga and I have been going (probably because I can go anytime based on my schedule and the place is a 5 minute walk from home).

And if you think you'd do better with something at home, get a cheap treadmill or elliptical off craigslist just to try it out and see if you'll stick to it before making an expensive purchase.

I also recommend myfitnesspal for calorie tracking. It's not the best (as someone pointed out, it's hard to track meals you've made at home), but it definitely helps! I put on some baby weight when I was pregnant in the summer/fall and I've been steadily losing it while using the app.

  • I've done WW in the past and liked it.  I've also tried cutting out processed foods and that's helped me.  All whole grain stuff, etc.  It not only helped me lose some weight, but I also felt great, too.  I'm actually thinking of doing this again (I did it last year) cause the weight's been creeping back on.
