We are moving from MD to CA at the end of May. We are selling one car and shipping the other, right before the move. Now we are trying to figure out the least expensive way to move our things. I'm looking into PODS and other similar moveable storage options. We are really don't have a lot of furniture we want to bring (think lots of Ikea and the similar.) Planning on buying new pieces through consignment, thrift stores, CL, etc... I do like our couch, dining room set and mattresses, but not sure if it is worth it to bring them along.
If you have made a big move, do you have any advice? Any blogs you have found with people detailing their move and costs? Feeling overwhelmed over the different options. I know I need to sit down and create a budget for each room and compare that cost to the cost of moving what we have, does that sound right? I am lost! Help!
Re: Advice/ideas on saving money on a cross country move?
The good news is, you know exactly what you're getting in to then! :-) Ok, Ventura isnt crazy expensive, but also not very close to go to our local Ikea (well, I live in SD so I have one really close). Based on that, I would bring you items you love with you. If you are going to do that, why not pack up whatever else you have an like too in the PODS or truck you will rent? When I moved here from Texas, those two options were BY FAR cheaper than any other route I could find - even when compared to buying new stuff. I forgot how expensive it is to buy easy things (like cleaners, condiments, brooms, mops, plates and cups, etc) and was so glad I decided to pack and bring stuff instead.
FREE BOXES!!!
Visit your local grocery on restocking days and collect all their empty boxes. They have to recycle them anyway and I have never met one that wouldn't give them up especially when I said I'd break them down myself.
Bring a box cutter with you and break them down before putting them in the car so you can really load up.
