I just spent a bajillion hours with social security. We never received E's social security card in the mail. They have documented that they mailed it a month ago. I was able I get his number and have to apply for a replacement card, but I'm worried about where the original is. My only thought is that perhaps someone took it from our mail. How would I check to see if someone is using his number? Do I run a credit check? I don't want to be paranoid but I don't want to be naive either with how prevalent identity theft is.

Yes you would run a credit check, but I would wait at this point to do anything. It can take a long time for things to get reported to a credit agency so it's possible nothing would even show up yet. My nephew's SS # was stolen by a girl at the pedi office and it took 6 months before anything even popped up. We found out because he started get credit card applications.
Hopefully it's just a mix up on SS's part.
Congrats to my TTC buddies Amberley18 and tdmd09!
