Bottle Nipple help

We have been using the bottles we took home from the hospital since the twins came home, but I know we can't use them forever because they only hold 2oz and probably aren't meant for repeated use. However I'm struggling to find bottles and nipples that are similar to those bottles. Slow flow nips seem too slow and it takes them for.ev.er to finish a bottle. But a medium flow seems too fast and they strug GmbH le to keep up. Advice or recommendations?

Re: Bottle Nipple help

  • hm. yeah we didn't re-use those bottles, i guess we could have, i didn't even think about it. i just threw them away when they were done. we just used level/stage 1 nipples and they were fine. it should take about 15 minutes for a baby to finish a bottle, give or take. when it started taking J 40+ minutes to finish a bottle i started to realize it was time to change the nipple to the next level. i would double check to make sure that the nipples are in fact level 1. i think they make premie nipples as well. that wouldn't be what you want, but make sure that isn't what you have (because theoretically if you do, i would then try a level 1).

    does this make sense?

also, how many times have you tried the medium flow (what level are they?)? it usually takes a few bottles for the baby to catch on and figure things out. it may take some time and a some taking the bottle away so that they can catch their breath, swallow what they're drinking, then giving the bottle back, rinse, repeat. but if they're not catching on then obviously the nipple flow is in fact too fast. i'm sure you know all of this though, just making sure.

  • Different brand nipples have slightly different flows, if that makes sense... not all are exactly alike.  Maybe look at reviews?  CCH is right that it might take a few tries for them to catch on.  Even though it might take them a while to finish a bottle, if they are not upset or fussy then they might not want/need to switch yet.  Mine switched to med flow at 2 weeks adjusted, so you never know!

We still use the 2oz bottles for the hospital when we need to give meds and vitamins... about 1/2 oz formula or BM mixed with the meds, then give them the rest of their feeding in a regular bottle.  The bottles from the hospital aren't very good at venting or preventing air from getting in their bellies.  We use Dr Browns but I've heard good things about Born Free and Tommy Tippee, too.  I know with Dr Browns, you will need to use Dr Brown's nipples, too, to get the system to properly work (at least that's what the packaging says LOL).

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

  • Mackenzie likes the Avent bottles the best. She is ok with Dr Browns but hates Tomee Tipee
