I know they are a big no-no per the AAP, but are they ever ok? Like, when the crib converts to a toddler bed?
Google is failing me!

Yeah that's what I was thinking. But since we only plan to be in our house another 2 years, our plan would be to keep them in their cribs and convert to toddler beds. I guess I was thinking to keep the bedding the same since they'll be sharing the same room and then when we move, invest in beds/new bedding. I thought the bumpers could be cute at the toddler stage if they were safe.
They may still be in cribs at that age. My two year old is, and I know plenty of 2-3 year olds that still are. You want to keep those suckered contained if they aren't climbing out!
Also I know the ones I got with m's set were one continual piece so if we took the side off the crib they wouldn't work.
Also I fully admit being very anal about SIDs p's friends child died of it several years back so we are extra various.
we had a fancy foo foo crib set made for Anna before the mesh bumper craze began... used it a few months then once she started moving around, crazy lady started sliding her head underneath it so I switched to a pink mesh one. Really the only thing it did was contain the paci's and keep her from getting limbs stuck although she still managed to do that. Now there is nothing on there because she knew how to take it off since it is velcro. I swear, my boys were nothing like her! I actually just bought some cute sheets to make it pretty since the room is neutral and she shares with JD.
Oh and you will not be using the bumpers once they are in toddler beds, no need for them. If anything, you will get a bedrail so they don't fall out but I would worry about that when you get to it. Like PP said, they may or may not be in cribs still. I know Anna will be kept in there as long as I can contain her although she already tries to escape. JD, on the other hand was in there till we kicked him out at almost 3. And only reason was because Anna needed it.
Pretty sure if either of the two had access to bumpers right now, they would serve as swords or intentional brohter/sister suffocation devices...

We also used bumpers with DD1 right until she moved into a "big girl" bed (at 2.5 yrs). I think she liked them since she would wedge herself into any corner available and they provided a more comfortable sleep for her--we took them out to wash them for a couple days and she slept terribly. However, I know its not recommended and its amazing that she didnt suffocate herself with how much she shoved her face into the bumpers, so we're not tempting fate twice and this time we're trying to go with no bumpers.
Just an FYI, bumpers likely wont work well with a toddler bed anyway because they are usually 4 sided and you'd only need 3 sides with a toddler bed so you'd have an extra side youd have to cut off or dangle behind the bed or something....unless of course you got a style that provided each side separately.
No bumpers for us, and no issues so far with limbs getting stuck.
For those of you with issues losing pacifiers behind the crib, have you tried Wubbanubs? DS loves them, and they don't tend to fall out of the crib nearly as easily. Plus, he can find them in the middle of the night much faster.

I'm super anti normal padded bumpers. I really don't even understand why they should even be allowed by the CPSC to be sold anymore. I say if you have to have them put them in the crib as decoration until your kid actually sleeps there then take them out. A stuck little limb doesn't happen often and can be easily remedied. SIDS and suffocation cannot.
We used the breathable bumpers for a little bit and they were fine, despite being a massive pain in the butt to put on.
Yeah the ones I'm looking at (custom bedding from etsy) come in pieces. But since I don't want to use them while they are babes, I guess I'm leaning towards not getting them.
Would a toddler get a limb stuck? These are the cribs we are leaning towards and they convert to toddler beds with a rail.

Sorry no clicky, on the iPad.
those are nice! My daughter intentionally sticks her legs in there now! When they're toddlers they can get their arms and legs out for the most part as opposed to when they're infants.
thanks! This is helpful. It's amazing how little I know.
And I don't know why they are so expensive on their site, we're ordering from Normans in Philly and they are significantly cheaper! He's an authorized dealer. He happens to be our neighbor, so we feel inclined to order from him even though he only carries 2 or 3 brands.
I used the bumper in Tommy's crib until he started rolling and moving in his sleep. Once he could move around I didn't want him rolling his face into it. If I ever have another kid I would skip the bumper all together. They're really only good for the decorating factor, not so much for the baby. Have you seen the skip hop sheets that looks like bumpers?

We have one...I wish I could find a way to attach her other binkies to the animal. She doesn't like the soothies anymore.
DS was over the Soothies for a while and then went back to them. Very strange.
Haha, a lot of it is trial by fire and learning on the job! My daughter's crib is just like that and I really like the style. It converts into a toddler day bed with a side rail.
