How long do you play with a one month old before you put them back down to sleep? Colton has been sick with a cold all week so I'm not sure what the actual norm would be, but he tends to still fall asleep while nursing often. If he wakes up during his burping we will talk and play either in my lap or sometimes on the floor, but it seems like this only lasts 10-15 minutes max before he starts whining and getting cranky. Diaper changes are usually before he eats and he'll be alert and happy; we'll sometimes spend maybe 5 extra minutes talking to him while we change him (if we go too long he'll cry to feed).
Does that sound similar to what your LO does? Or could this be a shortened time because he needs rest in order to get better? I'm curious what to expect with sleep and wake cycles as he's approaching 6 weeks.
Re: s/o of what to do with them
it has been hard for me to figure out (maybe i'm not a natural at this mom thing?) but i really have just gone by his cues. if he is whiney and cranky, i see if it means he is sleepy/tired/hungry (depending on what he has recently done). if he's awake for a little while, we hang out and interact. as he gets older, he is awake longer. at 1 month he probably wasn't awake all that much, 15-20 minutes maybe?
i've just now figured out his natural routine about 3-4 weeks ago (he eats, plays/hangs out/is content for 1-2 hours depending on his mood, cranky cries for a nap, wakes up, blood scream cries when he's hungry). learning the difference between his cries has been a HUGE help to me. i remember trying to figure out the difference when he was much younger and they all sounded the same to me. i suspect as he grew and his lungs and vocal chords developed this helped the process of being able to notice a difference. DH will now look at me and go "mom, what kind of cry is this? is he hungry?" and my answer is no 99% of the time because he only screams when he is hungry. the other 1% i leave there for rare exceptions and things we may not have encountered yet.
