BLW ?

Hey ladies, we are going to do BLW. G will be 5 months next week. The past week or so, he's been grabbing my hand with whatever I have in it, bread, banana and puts it in his mouth and sucks/gnaws on it. And if I hand it to him he does the same thing. Is that bad? Should I not let him do that?

Re: BLW ?

  • We hope to blw but 5 mos seems a little early. I haven't read the whole book yet, I'm working on finishing it soon so I can be ready when he is 6 mos.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • I know they say 6 months, i actually just finished the book. They also said that a lot of times the baby initiates sometimes and pick things off your plate and put in mouth.. Grabbing my hand kind of is the same thing to me.  If he didn't start grabbing my hand and putting it in his mouth it never would have crossed my mind. I don't offer it without him initiating.. Which is kind of why I'm asking if I should allow him to try if he initiates even though he's not 6 months and actually initiate meals once he is 6 months.

  • Lily has been doing the same and she turned 5 months last week. We started giving her foods 2 weeks ago. Sometimes she is interested in eating it. Sometimes she isn't. She has had oatmeal, banana, carrots and sweet potato. The recommended age to start solids is 6 months, but our pedi told us we could start her at 4 months. I wasn't quite ready to do that, so we waited a bit. I think it depends on your comfort level and if your LO seems interested and actually feeds themselves. Right now, Lily is more interested with mashing stuff up with her fingers than putting it in her mouth, and I am fine with that. She will take a spoon if I load it up with food and put it in her mouth and suck on it. We don't give her solids every day yet. But to answer your original question, yes, I think that it's ok for your LO to start trying some foods. I would read up some more on how and what to try giving them first.
  • Babies at that age put everything in their mouths. If you haven't, I suggest you read the book. My brain is fried, but the authors outline why they suggest waiting until 6 months.

We started with DS at 6 months, but it wasn't until about 8 months or so when we noticed he was purposefully eating.

  • We waited until 6 months at the advice of our pediatrician and the BLW book.  There is research saying babies' stomachs are not able to properly handle and break down food before that age.  DD was putting everything in her mouth by 5 months, but we waited another month.  At that point she did a great job of actuall getting food to and in her mouth, but it was another month and a half-2 months before she really started eating purposefully and not just playing and occasionally swallowing something.

  • I agree with kaiene. This is the age babies put everything in their mouth. I wouldn't necessarily take it as a sign they are ready to eat. However, if you are comfortable with it I don't see a problem in starting to give her solids. We wanted to wait until 6 months, but have been talking about introducing food now.
