Need fun ideas and creative minds :)

March is "Music in Our Schools" Month. I want to make sure it is obnoxiously known in my building. They are getting ready to push the standardized testing coming up in April. Music gets the back seat to anything testing-related since we need the kids to pass. I get it, but at the same time I want to be like "In your face! Kids love music!"

I cannot take away from instructional time and do any assemblies or concerts so I was trying to think of fun little things to do. I'm getting some music note decorations to go everywhere. I'm thinking about making some posters of "old guy" composers as well as modern day musicians the kids like and putting an inspiring quote or fact about them.

What else can I do?

One idea - Have a "name that tune" contest. Figure out a way for a short tune to be played during the morning announcements (a tape recorder or something) and then kids can submit guesses

Another one - Have a 'coffeehouse' in the cafeteria at lunch on Fridays. While everyone is eating, I'll have a piano and a mic set up and if a kid or group wants to perform, they can sign up and play.

Here's my somewhat out-there idea. The kids are just getting wind of the Harlem Shake viral videos. I was thinking of getting the teachers to make one and showing it at lunch on the first day of the month as a kick off for the month and maybe decorating the caf and playing music as a 'kick off party'.

Lame? Not lame? Any ideas? My kids are 6th and 7th graders... ages 11-14.

  • I like the idea of a 'name that tune' game during announcements!

  • The notes hung up, posters with quotes and especially the name that tune on the morning announcements would of been done at my middle and high schools.

Maybe make a timeline of posters with the quotes. Include composers, famous singers and bands.

How long does the testing last? Maybe they can do a Harlem Shake video(s) too after its all over. They need to get rid of that pent up energy somehow.

  • A group of kids just got suspended here for making a Harlem Shake video, in FILMOGRAPHY class, while a substitute was in for that day.  So lame.

Maybe you could involve other teachers and do some kind of "Musical" scavenger hunt.  I'm not sure if they switch classes or not, but maybe each day throughout the month, each teacher has a different musical fact/question/riddle and the kids have to collect them all or get stamps or complete a Bingo board or something similar.

Say what now?! Seriously? That is to much! And uncalled for. I feel that the Harlem Shake is dumb but whatever floats your boat. To me it looks like everyone is just acting goofy and dancing like a white person (Elaine on Synfeld and Raymond on everyone loves Raymond).

Seriously.  I guess it was photography class, not filmography class, though.  They didn't appreciate the humping of inanimate objects, I suppose. :)  I still think it's harmless and that those doing it are totally having innocent fun.  I, myself, sat and watched a few videos in a row last weekend.  LoL.
