Proactiv Users?

I posted this on Fashion and Beauty but thought I'd post here, too.  I started using Proactiv last week and it has made my skin incredibly dry, red, and sensitive.  While it cleared up my acne, it has made my face have patches of flaky, dry skin and red.  It's also really itchy.  I'm hoping this is normal for when you first start the product and that my skin has to adjust.  I'm using it every other day instead of every day in hopes that it will help.  What are your experiences witih Proactiv?  I almost prefer my face with the acne than the way it looks and feels with using Proactiv.

Re: Proactiv Users?

  • I used to use it.

I had it worked out where I could use the cleanser twice a day everyday, but the lotion was once every other day.  You can also try just doing it in spots as you work up to it. Your skin does adjust after a bit.  Don't forget a good moisturizer and do not use any other acne products.

  • I have been using it since this past summer.  My skin became incredilby itchy, red and dry when I first started.  I started using it only at night and I got an oil-free moisturizer at the drug store.  The kind that came with my Proactiv just wasn't cutting it (green tea moisturizer).

After a while, the itchiness and dryness went away.  Every now and then it comes back, but not often.  I only use the lotion at night b/c it stains my clothing.  I'd hate for my "good" clothes to become bleached.

To be perfectly honest, I just cancelled my Proactiv subscription b/c it just wasn't working for me.

  • I used it for 7 weeks, and my skin was sensitive and sore the whole time and i did not have clearer skin! ?It even hurt when i kissed my husband especially right after i washed my face because he is kinda scruffy. ?I stopped using it and i'm mad because i lost my?receipt?and could not get the refund. ?To help with the dry skin you can use an oil free moisturizer. ?
  • Are you sensitive to peroxide maybe? My sister bought the system several years ago and had a bad reaction to it - she even got a few hives! It was her own fault for not checking the ingredients more carefully, but she got her money back. I would contact customer service and see what they say, but for me, any flaking would be the end of it! That's harder to cover with makeup than acne. She actually gave the system to me and it made my acne worse...
  • I've been using it for over 5 years and have had great results with it.  I have sensitive skin so I've only ever used it once a day since the directions at that time said to let the skin get used to it before increasing use.  Initially it took a few weeks to see results but I started seeing my skin clear up so since it worked on just 1x a day I stuck with that.  I didn't/don't use any other acne products (I had tried everything except Accutane by the time i tried Proactiv and sometimes had problems with Cystic acne) and I use plain old Oil of Olay oil free moisturizer.  A friend of mine who is a former Radio City Rockette was just asking me a few weeks ago what skin care products I use because I have such "beautiful skin".  She almost didn't believe me that I used to battle cystic acne until I showed her one of the small scars I have under one ear.  I haven't had problems with it bleaching my clothes but I have bleached some washclothes so I usually try to use white or off-white washclothes.
  • Ugh, I hated Proactiv.  It did the same thing, but I eventually started breaking out on top of it again.  I stopped after a few months.  I can't seem to find anything that helps and it's really frustrating.  I just get a few problem MASSIVE zits every now and then and they are soooooo embarrassing. :(
